Celebrating its tenth year, the themes for this year’s extravaganza are water, fire and land. Taking the cake as the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas, deciding what to see can be quite overwhelming. We’ve picked the top six coolest and wackiest things that shouldn’t be missed this year:

Tap and treat yourself at the Cupcake ATM

Yes, you heard right. Vivid Sydney is now home to the world’s very first cupcake ATM. Follow the light (quite literally) on the magnificent Aqueous path at the Royal Botanic Gardens and it’ll lead you to a device of your dreams because, let’s face it, we’ve all dreamed of a cupcake coming out of an ATM. Just us? Can’t be! Courtesy of the delicious Sparkle Cupcakery, you’ll get to choose from red velvet or choc banana. We’ll take both, please.

Jump into a virtual BALLpit

Throwback to your childhood gymnastics class and swim, jump and move through thousands of virtually-responsive toy balls in The Rocks. Overflowing entire rooms rather than “pits”, this interactive artwork creates a world filled with colourful fantasy and childish fun.

Experience the most incredible water show, without the water

Move over Bellagio Las Vegas, this might just be the most incredible water show you’ll ever see—sans the water of course. Darling Harbour’s Cockle Bay is now the home of the dream-like Fantastic Oceans: a light and laser show cast out over the harbour where bio-luminescent jellyfish come to life, laser waves ripple through the air and creature silhouettes are created using multi-coloured light beams.

Finally… you can touch a rainbow

Grab your friends and visit The Rocks’ Harmony Valley, a celebration of friendship, harmony and happiness. Inflatable trees and Japanese-inspired creatures come to life surrounding the star feature: a huge inflatable ‘rainbow of peace’. Activate the sculpture by joining hands and forming a human chain that connects one end of the rainbow to the other and watch what happens!

Meet the 6-metre tall puppet named Marri Dyin

Barangaroo’s waterfront Wulugal Walk has been transformed into a magical land with Liminal Hour. The special guest? Her name’s Marri Dyin—meaning “Great Woman”—and is one of the biggest puppets Australia has ever seen. Paying tribute to the Aboriginal woman who once lived around the harbour, you’ll get to watch her astounding performance in over-size!

See Taronga Zoo transform into a world of gigantic, radiant animals

Hosting 290 multi-media light sculptures, Taronga Zoo is no longer just for the little ones. Wander past magnificent giant bees, multi-coloured elephants, towering tigers, a nine-metre long goanna as it emerges from the dark and a massive manta ray as it sails through the trees.
