How to Get to the Maldives from Australia
The Maldives runs from just south of India to just above the equator — a 900-kilometre chain rather than a cluster. The most visited atolls sit around Malé in the north-central zone.
Until recently, getting to the Maldives from Australia meant a stopover – typically Singapore, Dubai or Colombo – adding eight to ten hours to the journey each way. That’s changed. Luxury Escapes now operates a weekly direct charter from Melbourne to Malé, cutting total travel time to under 12 hours. The flight departs Monday evenings and arrives early Tuesday morning, timed for seamless onward transfers to your resort – with many resort partners offering early check-in to get you poolside before midday. The return flight departs Malé on Sunday evenings, landing back in Melbourne at lunchtime Monday.
From Velana International Airport you can reach the nearest resort in 15 minutes by speedboat. The furthest require a domestic flight followed by a boat transfer — closer to 90 minutes total.
Twenty of the 26 natural atolls host resorts. Each is a ring-shaped coral formation enclosing a shallow lagoon, with resort islands along the outer reef. Most resorts have two distinct environments: a sheltered lagoon side for swimming and a deeper, more dramatic ocean-facing reef for diving.
