From the fresh seafood of Perth to the fine wines of Margaret River and indulgent Manjimup truffles – Western Australia is a true foodies’ paradise.

Combine that with stunning scenery of pristine coastline and lush forests, and a gourmet road trip makes perfect sense.

We’ve rounded up the very best of Western Australia’s food scene, so all you have to do is decide on a designated driver and hit the road!

Whether you’re after fine dining or laidback eats, Western Australia’s capital has a food scene that’s constantly evolving, offering something for everyone. A longtime favourite among both visitors and locals is Rockpool Bar & Grill, serving juicy steaks and fresh seafood within the popular Crown complex. For classic fish and chips, you can’t go wrong with Cicerello’s (a little drive out of the CBD to Fremantle). This 100-year-old wharf building serves comforting food and one of the best seafood platters in Perth.

If you’re after something a little different, try Long Chim, a super-cool Perth hangout specialising in spicy Thai street food and delicious handcrafted cocktails. Brunch is best at Petition, located in the iconic 1878 State Buildings; try a kimchi and gruyere jaffle and wash it down with a grapefruit mimosa. Time your visit to cover a weekend and you can experience the bustling markets or plan your trip to coincide with one of Perth’s many food festivals.

Margaret River

The travel time between Perth and Margaret River is just three hours, so those on a tight schedule can easily do the journey in one go. However, if you do want to stop off, the quiet coast of Mandurah beckons. Here you’ll find tasty fish and chips and fresh oysters, with the added bonus of great dolphin-watching spots.

Once in Margaret River, your foodie adventure truly begins. At Voyager Estate the seven-course Discovery Menu is not to be missed. Each course is curated by 2018 Regional Chef of the Year, Head Chef Santiago (Santi) Fernandez) and inspired by one of the estate’s wines, with matching wine pairings available. Leeuwin Estate puts all its focus into seasonal West Australian produce, paired with current and museum-release wines. Don’t miss the tasting menu, which includes delectable dishes like kingfish chicken tartare and Margaret River venison. Established in 1967, Vasse Felix is Margaret River’s founding wine estate. The cellar door offers a tasting room, wine lounge, art gallery, wine museum and one of Australia’s most acclaimed restaurants – an unbeatable experience for wine aficionados.

Manjimup, Southern Forests

Unmissable for foodies, Manjimup is famed not only for its tall Karri forest, but also for its fresh produce. The ‘Pink Lady’ apple was developed here, with farming now evolving into the production of avocados, green tea, finger limes – and truffles. Home to Australia’s first mainland truffles, Manjimup is now ranked as the largest producer of the black Perigord truffles in the southern hemisphere, supplying to top restaurants such as Keller’s French Landry in Napa and Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck in England. Truffle season runs from June to August every year, so time your visit correctly and you can even join a truffle hunt yourself. If you’re purely interested in eating the truffle, head to The Truffle Restaurant at The Truffle & Wine Co. for its incredible two-person sharing platter. Dine on pitch black Angus beef with truffle mustard, smoked salmon with truffle aioli, parmesan with truffle-hazelnut honey and more.

As one of Western Australia’s oldest cities, Albany has had some time to refine its dining scene. Those with time to spare can stop off in Denmark en route and sample the beers at Boston Brewing Co., a family-run brew pub with a great beer garden. The best way to enjoy the food here is to eat and drink like a local. Head to Fredericks Café for your morning coffee – this friendly spot is loved by residents and is conveniently located on Albany’s main street. If you’re in the mood for something stronger, try the award-winning Limeburners Distillery for a whisky tour and tasting. On Saturdays, head to the Albany Farmers Market, where the emphasis is on local products, from fresh shellfish to free-range meats and seasonal herbs and vegetables.
