Quintessentially Australian, the capital city of Western Australia is just the perfect location for a city escape: with wonderful weather, beautiful beaches and pristine parks to explore, we are sure your days in this incredible city will be filled with activities.
To make it even easier for you, we have narrowed down the top four things to do in and around Perth, so all you have to do is book your flights!
Whether you’re arriving by sea or by air, the protected, A-class reserve of Rottnest Island is a site frequented by travellers and locals alike. Its white-sand beaches, secluded coves and friendly furry locals – the quokkas – are just some of the attractions on this stunning 19sqkm island just off the coast of Perth.
Having been named “Rat’s Nest Island” by the Dutch founder due to the overflow of quokkas, Rotorvation Helicopters pilot Mike Morgan explains: ”I can see why they called them large rats, but they’re pretty much a very very cute hamster… and very friendly.”
Pristine coastline, miles of indigenous flora and fauna, and an incredible amount of food and wine experiences make the Margaret River Region one of the hottest holiday spots in Western Australia and one that showcases the diversity this gorgeous country has to offer.
One thing that’s synonymous with Margaret River is wine. With more than 200 vineyards, Western Australia is one of the nation’s largest wine regions, producing more than 25% of Australia’s premium wine including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc – with 15% of its finest premium wine produced in the Margaret River region.
“Great soil with cooling air… a stunning pure environment with these cooling sea breezes,” is why Vasse Felix winemaker Michael Langridge believes Margaret River has some of the best wines in the world.
“There are some amazing wines here that we are privileged to taste,” he says.
Rated one of the top ten multi-day walks in the country by Australian Geographic, one of the most beautiful features of this region is the famed Cape to Cape Track. Boasting 135km of striking coast from end to end, the track showcases the untouched nature of this region through rugged forests, commanding cliffs and rock formations, hidden caves, wild waters and a range of vegetation and wildflowers.
This exciting track can be done as a guided walking tour with companies like Walk into Luxury or can be tackled solo – just leave between five and nine days to complete it.
Sometimes the best way to explore a city is by walking and with an abundance of laneways, street art and sculptures, Perth proves to be one of the best cities to ditch your car in.
With more than 80 walls being used as a canvas for local and international artists in Perth’s laneways, there’s plenty to look at. Showcasing hidden bars and a fusion of underground and commissioned art, Wolf Lane is a must-see stop on your stroll around the city.
