Queensland’s capital, Brisbane, is a city full of sunlight, sights and spectacular skylines. If you don’t want to miss a single one of Brisbane’s iconic highlights, it may be time to take your sightseeing to the next level – with a helicopter tour of Brisbane’s CBD.

From the iconic Gabba Stadium to the instantly-recognisable Story Bridge, we took to the skies to enjoy all of Brisbane’s tourist attractions in a neat 15-minute flight with V2 Helicopters. And the best part? It’s a tonne of fun!

Brisbane by Helicopter

We flew with V2 Helicopters from Archerfield, a short drive from Brisbane’s CBD. Before we took off, we got the lowdown from Len, one of V2’s commercial pilots. Not being from Brisbane ourselves, we wanted to make sure we weren’t missing any of Brisbane’s highlights when we took to the sky.

“We’ll show you some of Brisbane’s highlights in and around the CBD, we’ll show you Gabba Stadium, Suncorp Stadium, the Story Bridge, some of the high rises, the Botanical Gardens…we’ll try and show you the best of what we’ve got on offer” said Len.

To Door or Not to Door?

After a safety briefing of the helicopter, we had to tackle a difficult question. Did we want to fly with the doors on or off? We opted for doors off to take advantage of the glorious views of Brisbane (pre-warning: if you opt for doors off and leave your hair untied, it will likely look like a bird’s nest upon landing!).

Flying over Brisbane

Taking off and flying over Brisbane was fantastic. Although personally a bit afraid of heights, I felt extremely safe and secure in the helicopter with our pilot Luke, even with the doors off. The sights were simply spectacular. Brisbane is a city made for the bird’s eye view perspective with the winding Brisbane River and buildings contrasted with the coastline stretching into the distance. My personal favourite part? Tracking the Brisbane River and getting a great view of the famous Gabba Stadium.

The Verdict

A flight over Brisbane is a wonderful way to see the city’s diverse sights, especially if you’re only in Brisbane for a short amount of time. If you’re anything like me and have a terrible sense of direction, seeing the city from above helps put everything in perspective. Although you do not need to have the doors off, it offers a bit more adrenaline when going round corners and following the Brisbane River.

When we got out of the helicopter, having caught the flying bug, we immediately checked with Len to see where else we could fly.

“Join us for one of our CBD tours, Moreton Bay tours or a Gold Coast tour. If you’re really up for it, come for the Moreton Bay Sea life Tour and check out the whales and the dolphins and all the other fantastic stuff we’ve got to show you,” he replied.

“Part of what we do at V2 helicopters is teach people to fly, so if you want a change in career, and want to get up in the air with us, come down and do a trial flight.”
