Shangri-La Bangkok Is A Riverside Haven In The Heart Of The City

Shangri-La Bangkok offers a polished riverside base where the Chao Phraya, Thai hospitality and easy city access shape the stay. Here’s why this long-established Bangkok hotel remains a smart choice for first visits and return trips.

Shangri-La Bangkok makes the river part of the stay

Shangri-La Bangkok sits on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, placing one of the city’s most active waterways at the centre of the experience. Long-tail boats, ferries and river cruisers pass beyond the gardens, while the city’s traffic and towers continue on the other side of the hotel’s gates.

The setting gives the property a distinct rhythm. You can spend the morning exploring Bangkok’s temples and markets, then return for a swim, a spa treatment or dinner beside the water. With direct access to the BTS SkyTrain and public ferry terminal, the hotel also makes it easy to move between the riverside, shopping districts and the city’s historic centre.

For travellers visiting Bangkok for the first time, it offers an uncomplicated base. For returning visitors, the river-facing setting gives the city a different point of view.

The Chao Phraya is the view you wake up to

Shangri-La Bangkok has 802 guestrooms across two adjoining towers, with rooms designed in a contemporary style accented by classic Thai details.

The 36-square-metre Deluxe River View Room is a sensible choice for couples, with panoramic views of the Chao Phraya River, a marble bathroom and a king or twin beds. For more space, the 44-square-metre Krungthep River View Room includes a private balcony overlooking the water.

The Krungthep Wing has its own entrance and lobby, along with spacious rooms, Thai-inspired furnishings and access to a quieter section of the property. Families can also choose connecting rooms, including two Deluxe River View Rooms that combine to create 72 square metres of accommodation.

If you prefer to build more of the stay around the hotel, Horizon Club rooms add access to a private lounge with breakfast, afternoon tea, evening cocktails and all-day refreshments. That changes the practical shape of a Bangkok itinerary, giving you a calm place to pause between excursions.

Shangri-La Bangkok

You can eat beside the river without leaving the hotel

The hotel’s dining line-up covers Thai, Chinese, Italian and international flavours, with several venues positioned close to the Chao Phraya.

Salathip serves Thai cuisine in traditional teak pavilions beside the river. Classical Thai dance performances add a cultural element to dinner, while the setting makes the restaurant a natural choice for a first-night meal.

NEXT2 Café takes a more relaxed approach, with market-style international dining and indoor and outdoor tables beside the water. Its buffet includes Asian classics, Indian dishes, seafood, barbecued favourites and desserts, making it especially useful for families and groups with different tastes.

For Italian food, Volti Tuscan Grill & Bar focuses on modern Italian dishes in a warm, music-led setting. Shang Palace serves Cantonese specialities, while the Shangri-La Horizon Cruise takes dinner out onto the river, passing historic buildings and landmarks including Wat Arun, Wat Pho and the Grand Palace area.

There is also a chocolate boutique for something small between meals, plus the Lobby Lounge and The Long Bar for drinks and light bites.

Shangri-La Bangkok

The hotel gives you an easier way into Bangkok

The location is one of Shangri-La Bangkok’s strongest practical advantages. The BTS SkyTrain and public ferry network are both close by, so you can choose between moving above the traffic or travelling along the river.

The Grand Palace and Wat Arun are within easy reach by car or boat, while the nearby Bang Rak neighbourhood offers cafés, restaurants and bars for a more local evening. You can also use the river to reach markets and temples, turning the journey itself into part of the day rather than treating it as a transfer.

The hotel is approximately 30 minutes from Suvarnabhumi International Airport by car, depending on traffic. Bangkok traffic can change the timing considerably, so it is worth allowing extra time for airport transfers and major sightseeing days.

Chi, The Spa offers a slower counterpoint to the city

After a day in Bangkok, Chi, The Spa gives you space to slow down. The spa sits beside an outdoor relaxation pool and offers treatments designed around massage, body care and restoration.

The hotel also has a health club, tennis courts and two outdoor pools, so you can keep the day active or simply settle into a lounger beside the river. The contrast is useful: Bangkok rewards early starts and full days, but the hotel gives you enough on-site space to make an afternoon of doing very little feel worthwhile.

The current Luxury Escapes package adds an easy layer to the stay, with selected options including daily breakfast, Horizon Club access, evening drinks and canapés, a one-time dinner and private check-in and check-out. Some packages also include a 45-minute massage at Chi, The Spa, so check the individual offer before booking.

Shangri-La Bangkok

Shangri-La Bangkok is a strong base for a first or repeat visit

Shangri-La Bangkok works because it gives you two versions of the city. Beyond the hotel, Bangkok is fast, crowded and full of movement. Inside, the river, gardens, pools and dining venues create a slower setting to return to.

You can spend the morning at Wat Arun, take the ferry back along the Chao Phraya, stop for lunch at NEXT2 Café and finish the day with a Thai dinner at Salathip. Or you can leave the itinerary open and let the river, pool and spa set the pace.
