An Exciting Fusion of Old and New at Lanson Place Parliament Gardens

One of Melbourne’s newest hotels is in a Goldilocks position for those wanting peace but also city convenience.

The heritage facade of the Salvation Army Printing Works from 1901, with its grand arches and cream and red-brick colouring, forms the grand entrance to this new Melbourne hotel. Inside the historic building, that also has a trim of traditional bluestone, is the hotel’s bar and restaurant, Chronicle 502, and the reception that acts as a bridge between the old building and the new $80-million tower of modern rooms. The printing history is referenced in the 40-metre-long art installation that connects both buildings from local artists Jarra Karalinar Steel and Corey Thomas which looks like the leaves of a manuscript floating across the ceiling.

What’s the neighbourhood like?

Quite a few of the neighbours are elected members of parliament as the hotel is just across Parliament Gardens from Spring Street. This little patch of greenery provides a nice front lawn to the hotel and gives you a feeling of space despite the fact you just across the road from the CBD. You can easily walk to Chinatown, to new bar Solace, that took over the venerable Croft Alley bar space, or a rock ‘n’ roll pint at Hats and Tatts. You are also opposite the Princess Theatre and a short walk from the rest of Melbourne’s theatre district. Set off north and Fitzroy’s Gertrude Street with its shopping and eating (get to Marion Wine Bar) is just a stroll away.

Where am I sleeping?

My one-bedroom apartment starts with a sizeable bathroom, including free-standing tub, then comes the bedroom (both of which look onto an office block). But when you get to the living space – kitchen, both fridge and freezer, kidney-bean-shaped couch, armchair and TV – the windows look out on to Parliament Gardens where people are taking photos in front of the Coles Fountain. At night the Princess Theatre lights up like a Christmas tree, and knick-knacks like vases, books and figurines are on display in cubes set into the wall that give the space a homely feel – they are part of the 462 pieces of commissioned art contained within the hotel.

What’s on the menu?

Chronicle 502 Bar and Dining resides in the old printworks and offers a simple bistro-style menu with dishes like corn and comte cheese croquettes, smoked kangaroo carpaccio and beetroot risotto. The breakfast buffet takes place in the Albert Lounge, a bright space on the second floor; it also doubles as a co-working space.
