Travellers visit in droves, hoping to relax and unwind, play and explore, soak up the sun and fresh sea breezes, as well as indulge in some delicious dining experiences.

From traditional local cuisine by the beach to luxurious, world-class restaurants in opulent overwater settings, the breadth of restaurants, cafes and beach bars across the archipelago caters to all budgets and palates. With such a variety of quality restaurants, the waterside dining experience in the Maldives is guaranteed to be unforgettable.

Reethi at One&Only Reethi Rah

By day or night, the stunning Reethi Restaurant at One&Only Reethi Rah is a feast for the senses. From the sweeping overwater deck offering phenomenal views of the private island’s east bank, to the traditional Maldivian decor and carved pillars holding up the vaulted ceiling, the restaurant is a sight to behold. Listen to the sounds of the waves and breathe in the smell of salt air alongside heady scents of spices and wine for a delightful sensory experience.

The flavours are the true winner here, with a plethora of dishes leaning on Maldivian Asian, Italian and modern European influences, perfectly offset with a choice of over 20,000 bottles of fine wine. Skilled chefs use only the freshest local ingredients to ensure the flavours and food quality are always top-notch. The menu has been carefully curated to please even the most discerning palate.

Overseas by Mathias Dahlgren at Soneva Jani

Perched directly over the tranquil waters of Medhufaru Island, the amazing Overseas Restaurant at Soneva Jani Resort gifts a dreamy overwater experience with phenomenal views from a spacious jetty deck. This overwater, plant-based restaurant is an ode to organic produce and the sea, perfect for those who love fresh flavours and unique fare.

Located at the end of an overwater jetty, the restaurant makes for the ideal sunset viewing spot. Indulge in single plates, sharing plates and signature mains, each hand-crafted using international infusions. Sip at a signature cocktail while admiring uninterrupted views of the sparkling Indian Ocean. Admire the pink and orange glow of the sunset as you dine on mouthwatering tapas, a la carte dishes or shared meals using fresh, local seafood and other flavourful ingredients.

Funa Restaurant at Angsana Velavaru

The exquisite Funa Restaurant at Angasana Velavaru is a highly rated dining choice, and it easily competes with the region’s most celebrated fine dining options. This overwater venue is absolutely idyllic, with a west-side location giving way to tranquil sunset views. The outdoor seating includes a luxurious mix of tables and lounges where you can sip refreshing drinks and world-class Pan Asian fare while soaking up the rays. At night, the area is a vibrant blend of creative lighting and natural beauty, with the starlight reflected in the ocean’s ripples.

The food at Funa is decadent, with fresh, local ingredients used to create mouthwatering Pan Asian favourites. Feast on tuna tartar, laksa and sashimi, finishing off with dessert (we recommend the mango sticky rice).

Subsix at Niyama Private Islands

If you’re looking for the ultimate in waterside dining, you can’t be any closer to the water than the absolutely spectacular Subsix Restaurant and Bar at Niyama Private Islands. For an exclusive subaquatic dining experience that is simply like nothing else, you can’t look past this divine spot. Transportation to this restaurant requires a speedboat. On arrival, descend six meters down a three-tier staircase to reach an intimate space on the coral reef floor. Once there, you can enjoy a delicious fresh beef and reef-style menu, plus an extensive cocktail and drinks menu with some truly creative flavours.

The interior is classy and modern, with a ceiling draped with mother-of-pearl shells, comfortable anemone chairs and an ever-present blue glow from the huge floor-to-ceiling viewing windows. Of course, the view is spectacular, with bright sea-life weaving in and out of the colourful coral. Later, the restaurant comes to life with its own burst of vibrant colour at the adults-only glow party. The lights are dimmed, the state-of-the-art sound system is turned up and you can party the night away with iridescent pens that you can use to leave your impression on the viewing panes.
