Chasing Adventure: Bali’s Best Day-Hike Waterfalls

|||||

Venture beyond Bali’s white sand beaches to marvel at thundering waterfalls, perfectly set against a backdrop of verdant jungle terrain.

Hidden among Bali’s lush tropical rainforests are some of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls, with many hiding below the radar of the thousands of visitors who frequent the island each year. From scenic crystal-clear swimming pools – perfect for a refreshing dip – to 60-foot rushing falls, Bali's waterfalls offer everything from the serene to the dramatic. Whether you visit one or more of these stunning natural wonders, you’ll be leaving the island with memories to leave a lasting impression.

Where are Bali’s best day-hike waterfalls located?

We’ve found Bali’s best day hike ‘Air Terjun’, meaning waterfalls in Indonesian, so you can pack some snacks, sturdy shoes, swimwear and a camera and enjoy these hidden beauties.

Spellbinding Sekumpul Waterfall – Sekumpul

If we had to name Bali’s most beautiful waterfall, it would have to be Sekumpul Waterfall. Showcasing six or seven glorious cascades of varying heights, this waterfall is a photographer's dream. Young trees, moss and vines cling to the waterfall’s rocks and the delicate layer of mist from the cascades causes multiple rainbows to appear above the clear pool below. A lush emerald forest of large-leafed plants, twining branches and wet, mossy rocks perfectly frame this beautiful oasis.

Located in Sekumpul Village, this scenic spot is the perfect day trip for those staying at Nandini Jungle Resort and Spa. After traversing the moderate track you’ll be well-rewarded for your efforts, as this is one of Bali’s most impressive sights.

Where: Sekumpul, Lemukih, Kabupaten Buleleng

Mesmerising Munduk Waterfall – Munduk

Munduk Waterfall is known as the ‘Niagara Falls of Bali’ thanks to its multiple cascades and gorgeous surroundings. The waterfalls consist of three cascades with the largest being Niagara Munduk, a 15-metre stunning water feature that drops into a clear pool perfect for swimming. The surrounding area is spectacularly beautiful, with thick forest, rice fields and clove plantations hedged in by rugged mountain peaks.

Located near Munduk Village, this gorgeous oasis is just a short day trip for those staying at the luxury Kayumanis Ubud Private Villas, and the waterfalls are easily accessible via a well-maintained trail and approximately 50m from the car park. During peak season, Munduk Falls are best viewed in the early morning or late afternoon.

Where: Jl Raya No.Desa, Munduk, Banjar, Kabupaten Buleleng

Beauiful Banyumala Twin Waterfalls – Wanagiri

Set your sights on the Banyumala Twin Waterfalls and admire two stunning cascades dropping into an easily-accessible pool below. The water from the twin falls is sparkling clean and trickles gently down the steep rock cliffside while creating a fanning effect closer to the bottom. There’s also a shorter, smaller cascade that enters the pool from the side, and acts as a great little natural shower.

Nestled in the Wanagiri Hills, just 10 minutes from Bedugul, the falls are accessed fairly easily via a natural track. For true peace and serenity, it’s recommended to visit in the early mornings – and you may even have the park to yourself.

Where: Wanagiri, Sukasada, Buleleng

Amazing Aling-Aling Waterfall – Sambangan

The sacred Aling-Aling Waterfall isn’t just gorgeous to look at – it’s also the perfect location for those looking to experience some excitement in a natural environment. Explore several smaller offshoot waterfalls and watch as locals dive from cliffs and fly down the natural 35-metre water slide. While Aling-Aling waterfall itself is a spiritual site, meaning you can’t swim there, the park surrounding these picturesque falls offers endless swimming holes and shallow wading areas in an idyllic natural setting.

Aling-Aling and its offshoots (Kembar, Kroya and Pucuk waterfalls) are located in the village of Sambangan and are best viewed with the help of a guide. The best time to visit these is in the mornings to beat the daytime heat.

Where: Jl Raya Desa Sambangan, Kabupaten Buleleng

Thundering Tibumana Waterfall – Apuan

The picture-perfect Tibumana Waterfall is the place to head to if you love swimming and relaxing. The pool below this impressive five-metre-tall cascade is nice and shallow, making it a great place to unwind under the mist above. The waterfall runs along a cliff face before dropping, and there’s a grotto-type cavity at the base of the cascade. The lush jungle surrounding the falls makes the ideal tropical backdrop, and the sandy embankment is perfect for wading around on hot Bali days.

Tibumana Waterfall is located in Apuan Village just outside Ubud, and is within easy reach for those staying at Maya Ubud Resort or Tanadewa Resort and Spa. The 10-minute walk from the carpark to the falls is considered fairly easy, with a concrete walkway, bamboo bridges and some steps. Morning times are the best to avoid crowds,  and the falls are great during wet and dry seasons for swimmers or eager photographers hoping to capture some extra special photos to hold onto forever.
