I Checked into One of Cairns’ Most Social Esplanade Stays

Glass-sided pools, a bar with a whisky wall and rooms with city or harbour views – Crystalbrook Flynn brings five-star flair to the Cairns Esplanade.

In theory, I’m made for tropical living: ocean air, balmy nights and a suitcase full of linen. In practice, my curls have strong opinions about humidity and I like a power-pressure shower after a day out. Crystalbrook Flynn lets you enjoy the tropics with five-star comforts: glass-sided pools facing the Esplanade, an indulgent spa, and three bars and restaurants for an easy evening in. Cairns is on the doorstep, while reef and rainforest adventures are within easy reach. Inside, turquoise, pink and white set a relaxed tone – one that calls for slides over anything too formal.

What is the location like?

The first thing I noticed arriving in Cairns was how close everything is. Getting to the hotel was just a 10-minute drive from the airport, and the only Uber I booked the whole stay.

The hotel has two main entrances: a porte cochere onto a busy street and another that opens onto the Esplanade. As you leave through the Esplanade entrance and head towards Boardwalk Social – the hotel’s ground-floor waterhole – the buzz grows louder with each step until you reach the heart of the action. From there, Cairns’ dining, markets and attractions are close by.

The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is just steps from the hotel and a big part of the area’s appeal. This 4,800-square-metre saltwater swimming facility offers a year-round place to swim without stingers or crocodiles. On my first-night walk, I saw families in the water, picnickers on the grass, lifeguards on duty and buskers bringing the Esplanade to life.

Where am I sleeping?

I stayed in The Harbour Room, splashed with tones of turquoise, pink and white, with a king bed that made me feel small. Views over Trinity Inlet were especially rewarding in the morning when the light gradually picks out the hills and water. The balcony makes an easy spot for coffee and a book; balconies are available in selected rooms, so check when booking if one matters to you.

As someone who likes to unpack properly – especially when the day goes from snorkelling to dinner somewhere fancy – I appreciated the raised bench. It gave my suitcase space to spread out, and my clothes somewhere to land besides the bed. After a day out, the mood-lit shower made winding down feel easy. And the bedside lighting controls? A few pages of reading, one tap, lights out – no getting up required. Sometimes it’s the small luxuries.

What’s on the menu?

Breakfast at Flynn’s Italian is a handy start before an early day trip. The buffet’s hot station serves eggs cooked your way, waffles, roasted vegetables and hash browns, alongside pastries and continental options. Barista-made coffee costs extra, but there’s also a self-serve machine too. By evening, the lights dim and Flynn’s Italian shifts to antipasti, pasta and mains. Start with the onion tart or beef tartare, then try Moreton Bay bug and prawn linguini or grilled reef fish. The menu brings the flavours of the region to the table.

Downstairs, Boardwalk Social opens straight onto the Esplanade. It’s a lively, casual spot for pub favourites, pizza, seafood and drinks, sometimes with live music or sports adding to the energy. The shift from Italian dinner upstairs to the easygoing Esplanade buzz downstairs gives the hotel two distinct moods, just a few steps apart.

Of the three venues, Whiskey & Wine feels the swankiest. My glass of Riesling arrived with attentive service from a bartender in suspenders. Brass and timber details set the mood, while an old-school ladder reaches the floor-to-ceiling whisky display. Outside, the sprawling balcony catches the ocean breeze and is the ideal spot for a nightcap on one of Cairns’ many balmy nights.

What are the pools and facilities like?

Two glass-sided pools face the Esplanade: one beside open-air bar at Flynn’s Italian, the other larger one near Whiskey & Wine. Poolside cocktail, anyone? Shaded seating means you can enjoy the open air without sitting in the full Cairns sun.

After a choppy day snorkelling, a massage at Eléme Day Spa is just the ticket for easing those post-swim aches. Treatments can be tailored to suit your needs, whether you’re after a proper muscle reset or something more restorative. If you’ve still got energy to spare, the hotel’s fitness centre is open 24 hours every day.

What sets Crystalbrook Flynn apart?

The location couldn’t really be better. From my room, I could watch the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon buzz with activity. The Night Markets were almost next door, and even the marina felt close with my day bag in tow. That made setting off for a Great Barrier Reef trip easy: the marina was a 10-minute walk away, so my main concern was leaving enough time to grab a coffee before boarding.

And, after a day out, my favourite comforts were waiting back at the hotel: space to unpack, a proper rain shower, shaded pools and a glass of Riesling above the Esplanade. Reef and rainforest by day, five-star comforts by night – that’s my kind of tropical living.
