Is a Private Pool Villa Resort Upgrade Worth It?

You’ve found the perfect resort, now it’s time to choose between their hotel room or pool villa upgrade: here’s what you actually get for the cost.

There’s a moment that happens during almost every villa upgrade stay when the extra spend makes total sense. It usually hits around the second morning, as you look out at a stretch of water that belongs to no one but you. Private pool villas have shifted from a rare, occasional indulgence to the centrepiece of how luxury travellers holiday, and once you understand what’s on offer, it’s easy to see why.

So, what exactly are you paying for when you trade a traditional hotel room for a villa? It’s less a single upgrade and more a string of small ones, like privacy, space, service and a little extra indulgence that collectively add up to a holiday that feels entirely your own.

Extra privacy and garden space

Step outside a villa and there’s no corridor, neighbouring balcony or shared walkway, just your own manicured garden or, in the Maldives, your own patch of turquoise lagoon. At Mulia Villas in Bali, each one is tucked into the hills of Nusa Dua behind private pathways and secluded tropical gardens. By contrast, the wider Mulia Resort with its hotel rooms offers easy access to the restaurants, shared pools and beachfront. Both options have their own benefits, but if you’re after added space, seclusion and a private place to swim, the villas are for you.

Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives makes the same choice visible in a different setting. Compared to the room categories, the resort’s beachfront and overwater villas offer a more self-contained base, either beside the sand or – the quintessential Maldives experience – over the lagoon, further out in the waters with unobstructed views and direct ocean access. The villa gives you more space to linger, unwind and keep the scenery to yourself.

Your own pool, whenever you please

Choosing a villa means opting out of the subtle politics of resort life. There’s no claiming a sunbed before breakfast and no waiting for the family ahead of you to finish their laps. A private pool means floaties stay out as long as you like, kids can splash without a second thought for other guests and a midnight swim is merely a few steps from your bed.

At Banyan Tree Phuket, the entry-level Pool Villa comes with its own private pool just steps from the bedroom, while the resort’s 1,300sqm DoublePool Villas raise the bar entirely with a 15-metre infinity pool in addition to a wading pool surrounding the glass-walled bedroom.

Space for the whole family

This is where villas are truly worth the extra investment over a standard hotel room. Multi-bedroom layouts mean everyone gets their quiet retreat while still sharing a kitchen, lounge or dining pavilion at the end of the day. Banyan Tree Phuket’s Grand Two-Bedroom Pool Villa spans an impressive 380 square metres with a master and twin bedroom, a kitchenette, dining area and a 34-square-metre pool and whirlpool built for family use.

Even for couples, a one-bedroom villa with a separate living area feels worlds roomier than a standard hotel suite. It feels less like checking into a commercial resort and more like borrowing a friend’s private holiday home.

Butler service and added VIP perks

The physical space is one thing, but the service that accompanies it is what makes a villa category stay feel genuinely five-star. While not every resort includes it, the ones that do change the entire rhythm of your stay.

At Mulia Villas, a dedicated butler handles everything from gourmet breakfast on your terrace to setting up afternoon tea. Whether you need dinner to effortlessly appear in-villa or want to arrange a sunset excursion, they handle the logistics behind the scenes. It is the kind of proactive service that turns “I should really book that spa treatment” into “it’s already taken care of.”

Added romance and luxury

For a honeymoon, anniversary or simply a holiday that deserves to feel special, the villa format opens the door to experiences a hotel room simply cannot accommodate. Think private, in-villa dining under the stars, deep rose petal baths drawn before dinner or a dedicated treatment pavilion steps from the bed.

In the Maldives, overwater villas place you directly above the lagoon, while beachfront villas open onto the sand and create a private setting for slow mornings and sunset drinks.

So, are they worth it?

The honest answer is that it depends on what you want out of your escape. If proximity to the buzz of a pool bar or restaurant matters most, a hotel room still has its place. But if privacy, space and an elevated level of service are what define a holiday well spent, a private pool villa earns every cent of the upgrade.

From the hillside seclusion of Mulia Villas to the tropical pool culture of Banyan Tree Phuket, the common thread is simple. You stop sharing your holiday and start owning it. Once you’ve experienced travel this way, going back to a shared pool and a queue for sunbeds starts to feel like the real compromise.
