Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just a family destination – there are plenty of romantic things to do on the Gold Coast, too.

A firm family favourite, the Gold Coast is often overlooked by couples. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find that with 52km of sun-kissed coastline, dazzling skyscrapers, fine-dining restaurants and hiking trails, hidden wildlife, refreshing water holes and native Australian flora hidden in the rainforest hinterland, the Gold Coast is a treasure trove for romantics.

Let our tips for the most romantic things to do on the Gold Coast persuade you to take an escape to its sugar-fine shores and endless sunsets.

Sky-high wining and dining

Sublime sophistication and cool coastal flare await at Nineteen at the Star. This sun-drenched rooftop restaurant is part of the renowned The Star Gold Coast entertainment complex and features incredible views of the glittering city skyline. Floor-to-ceiling windows, ocean-blue velvet chairs, champagne panelling, a sweeping curved staircase and a rich marble bar provide an intimate setting for acclaimed chef Uday Huja’s signature menu, which features a contemporary take on regional dishes inspired by land and sea. With an elaborate wine selection and world-class service, this restaurant more than lives up to its romantic reputation.

Dazzle with a glow worm tour

After dark, head inland to Springbrook National Parks’ Natural Bridge in the Numinbah Valley to be dazzled by the glowworm-covered caves. Grab your partner’s hand and head down the winding stairs into the spectacular caves, where you can gaze at these incredibly illuminated creatures that give off a magical starry night illusion. Keep an eye out along the way, as you might also spot some glistening glowworms between the rocks around the paths.

Is there anything as sweetly, straightforwardly romantic as a picnic? All you is clear skies, the right person by your side and… alpacas! Dine among the rolling vineyards of O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley with two adorable alpacas for company. Escape the hustle and bustle of the glitter strip and indulge in a ready-made gourmet picnic basket, served in a luxe boho teepee with pillows and chairs. You and your loved one will share a grazing board plus a bottle of O’Reilly’s wine, then end the date on a sweet note with ice cream. Sit by the picturesque creek, take adorable selfies with the friendly alpacas and enjoy two hours of uninterpreted views while feasting on your alfresco spread.

Sunset and sundowners at Rick Shores

Step straight off the sand and sit down at your table mere metres from the water, where you can watch surfers slice through rolling breaks and the sunset over the horizon. To the north, diners can admire the sparkling skyscrapers of Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise, while to the south, the natural beauty of Burleigh Heads beckons.  Needless to say, the restaurant has some of the best views on the Gold Coast; perfect for a long lunch or sunset dinner of local surf and turf with someone special. A meal at Rick Shores is best followed by heading upstairs to the ever-popular Burleigh Pavilion for post-dinner drinks.

Take a day trip to Lady Elliot Island

A day trip to Lady Elliot Island, one of the most romantic day excursions on the Gold Coast - Luxury Escapes

Treat your loved one to the ultimate act of grandeur with an all-inclusive day trip to Lady Elliot Island in the Great Barrier Reef. Leave the glittering Gold Coast in the early morning and board a scenic flight to the coral cay. Pamper your better half with the gift of life-long memories.

Your day trip includes a glass-bottom boat and guided snorkel tour to view a large variety of coral and brilliantly coloured fish, with the possibility to encounter turtles, dolphins and the resident manta rays. Buffet lunch and sparkling wine are included, followed by a fish-feeding demonstration and return flight with aerial views over North and South Stradbroke Islands, Moreton Island and Fraser Island, before landing back in the dazzling Gold Coast.

Soar over the hinterland in a hot air balloon

Take your love to new heights and float above the Gold Coast for a bird’s-eye view of the Hinterland region. Soaring high above, take in the golden light slowly illuminating the stunning landscapes, as the sun rises over the horizon. Enjoy over 40 minutes of flight time with expert commentary provided by a helpful crew, before your balloon gently touches down. Toast your thrilling adventure with a celebratory breakfast and sparkling wine at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards. This is undoubtedly one of the most romantic things to do on the Gold Coast.

Movie night at Yatala drive-in cinema

Get snuggly and steam up your windows with your date at the Gold Coast’s only drive-in movie cinema. Make sure to pack plenty of blankets and pillows to cosy up in the car or, if it’s a seasonably warm night, pack the picnic blanket to spread out under the stars. Your visit to Yatala-Drive In isn’t complete without a trip to the snack bar. Jive the night away in the ‘50s-themed American diner, complete with Cadillac couches, life-size statues of Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, and a fully stocked candy bar, where you can grab a hotdog or classic choc-top.
