Following the success of its sister venue at QT Gold Coast, Yamagen has landed in Melbourne with the same focus on exceptional ingredients and refined Japanese cooking.
The best way to experience it is through the omakase – a curated journey through the kitchen’s specialties. There are two options on offer. Expect everything from a delicate soft-shell crab roll and sashimi salmon tacos to truffle wagyu tartare and juicy lamb cutlets. Even the simple sesame house salad is memorable.
The drinks list is just as impressive. Yamagen holds Melbourne’s largest collection of Japanese whisky (more than 120 to choose from, many rare), alongside an extensive sake menu, and 100-strong wine list. It’s the kind of dinner that quickly becomes the highlight of your stay.

It’s very Melbourne: creative, a little unexpected, and confidently different. Even the lifts are lined with oversized floral murals, while warm lighting and carefully chosen artwork carry through the corridors. Everywhere you look, there’s something interesting to notice.
5. You’re only steps from one of Melbourne’s best rooftop bars
No Melbourne staycation is complete without rooftop drinks, and Rooftop at QT earns its place on the list. Our tip: arrive before 4pm. The best seats in the house fill quickly once the after-work crowd arrives.
Get there early, order a drink or two, and watch the light shift across the skyline before heading downstairs to get ready for dinner.
6. Rooms are bigger than they look – and quieter than you’d expect
Despite being right in the middle of the city, the rooms feel surprisingly spacious. Room-length windows frame the skyline beautifully, and from around the seventh floor you’ll look straight out over the city skyline – including Carlton Club next door. Thankfully, you’d never know it was there. The soundproofing does its job remarkably well.
7. You never need to leave
Mornings start at Pascale Bar & Grill with a relaxed a la carte breakfast (smashed avocado, buttermilk waffles and whipped ricotta, potato rosti with gravlax salmon) that feels more like a proper city brunch than a standard hotel meal. Deli QT covers the grab-and-go moments in between – the signature QT Conti roll is one of the city’s best kept sandwich secrets. And when evening rolls around, Yamagen is waiting just steps away in the neighbouring laneway.
QT Melbourne is one of those rare city hotels where staying in feels just as appealing as heading out – which might explain why so many guests end up booking another stay.
