Konnichiwa, and welcome to Japan!
Upon your arrival at Kansai International Airport (KIX), you’ll be met by a local representative and transferred to the city known as Japan’s food bowl, where glittering lights and soaring signs reflect on the shimmering Osaka River and the sizzle of cooking takoyaki fills the air.
Spend the evening at leisure exploring the sprawling shopping hubs and get lost in the tiny backstreets overflowing with restaurants and bars where you can try local delicacies as well as Japan’s answer to fast food, then rest up back at your hotel.
This morning, take in some of the city’s best landmarks, including wonderful Osaka Castle. Japanese samurai Toyotomi Hideyoshi intended the castle to become the centre of a new, unified Japan under Toyotomi rule. Continue to the busy Dotonbori entertainment district, painted bright with neon signs and home to myriad food vendors.
Next, travel to nearby Nara, where you will begin by exploring the Todai-ji Temple, a massive wooden complex containing one of Japan’s largest bronze buddhas. Stroll its grounds alongside the tame 1,000 Sika deer that are known to wander through the parks and sneakily nudge your hand for a treat.
Conclude your day by travelling on a captivating bullet train to Kyoto, Japan’s most successful and influential mode of travel. Zip past the landscape at speeds upwards of 300 kilometres per hour, taking in the extraordinary vistas unfolding in the distance. This evening, roll into Kyoto’s time capsule of laneways filled with tea houses, izakayas and geisha – if you can spot them vanishing down the back alleys.
Travel time: Bullet train – approx.30 minutes
Today, visit the Shinto shrine of Fushimi Inari – making pilgrimage through its vermillion torii gates – and Buddhist temple Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion thanks to the gold leaf that coats the top two floors. Watch as a dazzling reflection dances across the temple’s pond while you learn about the tumultuous history and spiritual importance of this spectacular work of design.
Next, visit Arashiyama and walk through the swaying stalks of Bamboo Grove, listening to the gentle clacking as you crane your neck toward the canopy. Conclude your day at Tenryu-ji, Kyoto’s most cherished Zen temple. Meander through its carefully designed gardens, strolling around the central pond and taking in the view of the nearby Arashiyama Mountains before visiting Gion, Kyoto’s most famous geisha district.
Following breakfast, journey to the Ninja Museum, where you’ll unravel the enigmatic secrets of ancient ninja arts, shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Delve into their stealthy techniques, uncovering the skills that once defined these elusive figures.
Continue two hours on to Nagoya and the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, where you’ll get an insider look into the evolution of Japan’s automotive industry.
Finish the day in Hamamatsu, another 90 minutes onward, where you will have the evening at leisure.
Travel time: Driving – approx. four hours
It’s time to leave Hamamatsu behind as you set off for Tokyo. Stop off about halfway at the immense Obuchi Sasaba green tea fields for breathtaking Mount Fuji vistas, before continuing to Gotemba Fuji Heiwa Park, where you’ll stroll around the manicured gardens while taking in the awe-inspiring beauty of Mount Fuji from a different perspective. This evening, arrive at one of the world’s greatest metropolises and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Tokyo is brimming with life and culture, both historical and contemporary. Spend your leisure time immersing yourself in fields of digital flowers at the incredible teamLab Planets art installation or explore the forested paths of Yoyogi Park, visiting the picturesque Meiji Shrine.
Tokyo’s world-class culinary scene beckons too, from the delectable sushi at Michelin-starred Nishiazabu Taku to the much-lauded chocolate delights of Minimal Tomigaya.
Travel time: Driving – approx. four hours
Your day begins in the historic Asakusa district, followed by window-shopping along Nakamise Shopping Street on your way to Tokyo’s oldest temple, Senso-ji. Continue to Tsukiji Outer Market – a bustling hub selling fresh seafood and other local delicacies. Your whirlwind city tour ends as you ascend to Tokyo Tower’s observation deck for panoramic views of the sprawling city.
For the brave, scramble among the crowds through Shibuya Crossing, then rest up back at your hotel.
After one final breakfast, it’s time to say sayonara to Japan. You’ll be transferred to Haneda International Airport (HND) or Narita International Airport (NRT) where your journey comes to a close.
Rising high above the Pacific Coast is one of Japan’s most recognised landmarks , the majestic Mount Fuji’. Capture the snow-capped peak of the country’s tallest stratovolcano from one of the world’s most famous green tea plantations at Obuchi Sasaba, where verdant tea fields sit peacefully below the imposing mountain. Then, elevated above Gotemba City, find a postcard-worthy view of Mount Fuji beside the chalk-white stupa of Gotemba Fuji Heiwa Park, located within beautifully manicured gardens that burst into beautiful shades of cherry blossom pink come springtime.
