Sofitel Sydney Wentworth Returns to Splendour After Major Renovation

Sofitel Sydney Wentworth started life in 1966 as a hotel created by Qantas for its staff (and fellow travellers). After six decades (and an extensive renovation) we discover why it’s still a modern hospitality masterpiece.

The hotel’s architecture has the sweeping curves that were fashionable with the jet-set crowd at the time and the renovation concentrated on updating the interior with a complete soft-furnishings overhaul and exciting new dining outlets.

The must-do is the Wentworth Bar, that breathes new life back into the unique social space at the centre of the hotel, with a modernised menu and a cheeky cocktail menu that nods to past eras.

What’s the neighbourhood like?

It’s about as central Sydney CBD as you can get. You can get to Circular Quay, Hyde Park, The Rocks or Martin Place shops in just a few sturdy strides. The hotel is perfect placed for a quick Sydney getaway where you have all the city sights at your doorstep.

Where am I sleeping?

My Junior Suite is split between a spacious bedroom overlooking the city and a comfy sitting room with views on to the revamped semi-circular open-air space that is now the Wentworth Bar (with a new awning for all-weather fun).

The bed is all crisp white linen and the room is decorated in calm brown tones; there is a simple sumptuousness to the space that invokes historic hotel stays. The living space has a wide cream sofa facing an interlocking coffee table.

What’s on the menu?

Start the evening at the Wentworth Bar with a Slipper-y When Wet, a reimagined Japanese Slipper cocktail that swaps the original’s sweetness with a tart yuzu hit. The Sofitel Sydney Wentworth’s fifth-floor bar has casual outdoor seating radiating out from a central tree with greenery peppered throughout; the feel is very Sydney, where you could easily while away a sunny afternoon over dishes like chilled scallop with citrus and roe, kingfish crackers with green chilli and coconut or fried calamari with chilli salt.

Next door is the Vietnamese diner Delta Rue which doubles as the hotel breakfast spot. The restaurants are run by House Made Hospitality; Delta Rue offers a refined space that offers nostalgic cocktails to a jazzy soundtrack.

What are the facilities like?

In the hotel’s heyday the Wentworth Ballroom hosted some of Sydney’s glitziest parties and it is back along with 15 other meeting spaces. There is also Sofitel Club Millesime that offers club members a private check in and lounge space in the same calm tones as the rooms. Platinum members of Accor’s ALL–Accor Live Limitless loyalty program can access the lounge free of charge.

Who will love Sofitel Sydney Wentworth?

There will be many Sydneysiders that have very fond memories of a vacation or staycation at this Sydney landmark and be very happy to have it back. The closure of this venerable stay left a hole in the heart of the CBD and its modernisation, with respect for the past, should keep old and new guests alike happy.

The writer was a guest of the hotel.
