These Are The Holidays No Family Will Want to Miss

From Malta to Malaysia, these underrated destinations make the perfect family-friendly escape.

Break away from the usual family holiday hotspots and discover destinations guaranteed to surprise and delight. From vibrant cities packed with family-friendly attractions to beachside stays and snowy mountain adventures, these escapes offer something for everyone – fun for kids, relaxation for grown-ups and unforgettable experiences for all.

1. Malaysia

Begin your Malaysia escape with a family holiday in Kuala Lumpur, where little explorers can marvel at the Petronas Twin Towers, the world’s tallest twin skyscrapers, and enjoy hands-on, science-focused fun at the onsite Petrosains, The Discovery Centre. Just a short drive away, the popular Genting Highlands hilltop station offers a cable car ride, temples, a strawberry farm and colourful indoor and outdoor theme parks – perfect for thrill-seekers of all ages.

Swap cityscapes for seaside serenity in Langkawi, where calm waters and soft sands make for an idyllic family escape. Enjoy a boat ride through the mangroves or soar above the island on the Langkawi SkyCab cable car.

2. Hong Kong

Unleash your inner child and let the kids run wild at Ocean Park theme park – home to giant pandas, red pandas and Asian otters – or Hong Kong Disneyland, where seven vibrant lands, from Adventureland to Tomorrowland, beloved characters and thrilling rides await.

Nature lovers are spoiled for choice; wander the fishing village of Tai O, marvel at the striking landscapes of Hong Kong’s UNESCO World Heritage Global Geopark or swim in Big Wave Bay’s turquoise waters, which (despite the name) is home to gentle tides and soft sand. For sweeping views, ride the Peak Tram (Hong Kong’s number one tourist attraction), hike the gentle Dragon’s Back mountain ridge or temple-hop across Cheung Chau island.

3. Europe

History and natural beauty collid in underrated Malta. Swim through the dazzling Blue Grotto – where a kaleidoscope of colour awaits beneath the surface – go parasailing and enjoy a traditional Maltese folklore dinner show before retreating to a family holiday resort with pools, kids’ clubs and easy beach access like Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands.

In Switzerland, glide through snow-dusted peaks on the iconic Glacier Express, cruise across the glassy waters of Lake Lucerne or ride the world’s steepest cogwheel railway to Mount Pilatus, where gentle hiking trails and panoramic views delight travellers of all ages.

Further west, chase the sun to Portugal’s Algarve region, a coastal wonderland where golden beaches and charming villages set the scene for unforgettable days. While little ones paddle in the calm, shallow waters, grown-ups can savour a well-earned sunset cocktail at one of the region’s renowned beachfront bars.

4. Skiing in Japan

In Niseko, legendary snow meets family-friendly fun, with gentle slopes and top-notch ski schools perfect for beginners. After carving up the mountain, sink into a steaming private onsen, a soul-soothing soak everyone will love. Stay at family-focused resorts like The Chatrium Niseko Japan, where ski-in, ski-out access, ski lockers, multiple onsite restaurants and spacious rooms make logistics easy.

Beyond the slopes, dive into Japan’s rich traditions. Roll up your sleeves for a sushi-making class or experience the charm of a traditional ryokan, complete with tatami mats and warm hospitality.

5. California

California’s most famous family-friendly attraction might be Disneyland, but there’s so much more for families to enjoy. Start in San Francisco – cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge, explore interactive exhibits at the Exploratorium, ride the San Francisco cable car and take a ferry to Alcatraz for an unforgettable history lesson.

For nature lovers, Yosemite National Park offers stunning views and easy hikes suitable for little legs. Kids will be amazed by giant sequoias and thundering waterfalls, while longer legs can challenge themselves on the Upper Yosemite Falls Trail.
