New Entry Requirements For Visitors to the UK
Planning a trip to the United Kingdom? There are new travel requirements for Australian travellers – here’s what you need to know.
Australian travellers now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to visit the United Kingdom. This new pre-travel pass is set to change how travellers (including Aussies) jet off to the UK – here’s what you need to know to navigate the updated requirements.
What is an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?
An ETA is a digital travel permit required for visitors from visa-free countries – including Australia – to enter the United Kingdom for short trips of up to six months. It’s designed to streamline the immigration process on arrival while keeping security in check.
Without an ETA, visitors won’t be able to board flights or enter the UK.
How do you get it?
The application process is straightforward and can be completed online or via a dedicated mobile app. To apply, you’ll need:
- A valid passport
- An email address
- A debit or credit card for payment
Most applications will be approved within 72 hours, but like travel insurance, it’s recommended to apply as soon as your travel plans are locked in. Once approved, the ETA is linked to your passport and is valid for multiple trips over two years (or until your passport expires).
How much does it cost?
Australian passport holders will need to pay a non-refundable £10 fee when applying for the ETA. If your application isn’t approved, you’ll need to pay the fee again when reapplying.
When does it start?
The requirement came into effect on January 8 2025.
Who’s exempt?
If you’re a UK or Irish citizen, you’re off the hook—no ETA needed. The same goes for travellers with a UK visa or residency. However, for Aussies and other passport holders enjoying visa-free access, this is now a must.
Why the change?
The ETA is part of a broader effort to improve border security while making the travel process smoother. Think of it as a quick check-in with UK authorities before you even leave home. While it’s an extra step for Aussie travellers, the ease of applying and the multiple-entry validity make it relatively hassle-free.
What do I need to do?
