When is the best time to visit New Zealand?
Adventurous New Zealand is best experienced during the summer months from December to March, thanks to the long, sunny days and warm weather perfect for beach retreats and outdoor exploration. New Zealand has a plethora of winter delights to offer as well, so don’t rule out a mid-year trip to make the most of the South Island’s alpine activities, with skiing and other snow sports easily accessible from Queenstown, Mount Cook and more. Expect mild temperatures year-round, with some chilly lows the farther south you explore.
Which New Zealand island should you visit?
Both of New Zealand’s North and South Islands have a host of charming destinations with exciting activities for every kind of traveller, so there’s no wrong answer here. Those seeking wondrous wildlife (including New Zealand’s abundant birdlife) will find no shortage of scenic spots on the North Island, from the Bay of Islands north of Auckland to the lush forests near Wellington.
Meanwhile, the South Island is perfect for outdoor adventurers, thanks to countless natural wonders such as the Abel Tasman near Nelson, jaw-dropping Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, the serene Milford and Doubtful Sounds near Te Anau, plus magnificent mountains from the Remarkables to Mount Cook and more.
New Zealand’s top wineries
Famed for its fantastic terroir, New Zealand is a wine-lover’s wonderland with excellent bottles on offer from Hawke’s Bay vines, Waiheke wineries and beyond. Most acclaimed of all is the Wairarapa wine region north of Wellington, where a climate similar to Burgundy helps the vineyards of Martinborough produce renowned pinot gris, sauvignon blanc and syrah. Ata Rangi’s pinot noir has earned international acclaim, while the cellar door at Poppies gives enthusiasts a chance to taste their signature rosé and Riesling.
