The island nation is a masterclass in contrast – ancient tradition sits by the latest advances in technology, snowfields sit above sun-soaked beaches and the bustling high-rises of main cities are interspersed with Zen gardens.

Most visitors on a Japan holiday package will start in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka or Hiroshima. In the capital, scramble across the manic Shibuya Crossing before shopping until you drop, or watch the city go by from the 634m-high Skytree.
