About the Tour

Karakol
Charyn Canyon
Almaty
Dushanbe
Tashkent
Samarkand
Bukhara
Khiva
Darvaza Flaming Crater
Ashgabat

The Five Stans in Central Asia sit at the crossroads of the ancient world, where Silk Road trading cities rise from the desert, nomadic traditions endure in mountain valleys, and a crater of natural gas has burned continuously in the Karakum Desert for decades. This journey takes you across all five – Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan – on an adventure that rewards curiosity with experiences you simply won’t find anywhere else.

Begin in Kyrgyzstan, where the Tian Shan mountains frame the shores of Issyk-Kul, one of the world’s largest alpine lakes. Walk the ancient lanes of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva, where turquoise-tiled mosques and caravanserais have stood for centuries, with a comfortable Mövenpick stay in Samarkand along the way. Cross into Turkmenistan to spend a night at a yurt camp beside the Darvaza Gas Crater, where a vast, fire-rimmed sinkhole glows against the desert sky, before winding up in Ashgabat with a farewell dinner.

This is a journey for travellers who are open to the unexpected. Border crossings, regional roads and remote stays are part of the experience – and so is the authenticity that comes with them.

Important Destination Information:

  • Visa credit/debit cards are recommended opposted to Mastercards. Restaurants in big cities generally accept cards. ATMs are available in big cities, while smaller towns have fewer ATM facilities.
  • The banking system in Turkmenistan is underdeveloped, with very few ATMs and a poor exchange rate, so travellers are advised to bring US$ cash. It is recommended to have approximately US$300 in good-condition cash for Visa purposes and other personal expenses.
  • Turkmenistan Visa:
    • All nationalities require a Visa to enter Turkmenistan. In order to secure the visa, we must first apply for a Letter of Invitation (LOI) with our local supplier. A list of traveller details is required to apply for LOI, which will be provided by the supplier upon booking.
    • Once the LOI is processed and approved, the supplier will provide a copy of approval to Luxury Escapes and guests can get their Visa on arrival at the overland border between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The cost of visa varies depending on nationality (approx. US$120 must be paid in good-condition cash).
    • Additionally, Turkmenistan currently requires an RAT COVID-19 test upon arrival, costing US$35 in cash.
