Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Wake to a hearty breakfast on board before setting off on your choice of Off Train Experience.

Wine lovers can journey to the picturesque Hunter Valley, Australia’s oldest wine region, renowned for its Semillon and Shiraz. Spend the day among the vines with tastings at Tulloch and Brokenwood Wines, followed by a platter-style lunch featuring local produce at Twine Restaurant. For a different perspective, you may choose an optional upgrade to a Hunter Valley helicopter flight, soaring above the region’s rolling green hills and vineyards.

Alternatively, discover Port Stephens by land or sea. Venture by 4WD across the vast Stockton Bight Sand Dunes, the largest mobile dunes in the Southern Hemisphere, stopping to admire sweeping views with the option to try sandboarding. Or take to the water on a relaxed coastal cruise through turquoise seas, with the chance to spot dolphins along the way. Afterwards, enjoy a leisurely lunch at Nelson Bay Golf Club before returning to the train.

For those wishing to stay closer to the city, explore Newcastle on a guided walking tour showcasing its history and coastal charm, followed by lunch at Scratchleys on the Wharf.

Return to the Great Southern this afternoon and settle in for an evening of regionally inspired dining on board.

Your choice of one Off Train Experience (included in fare):

  • Hunter Valley Wine Region

Known for superior semillon and shiraz, the Hunter Valley is around 50km inland from the New South Wales coast. After breakfast on board, you’ll disembark and spend the day visiting cellar doors in Australia’s oldest wine region. From historic Maitland Station (1880), you’ll take a relaxing coach ride into this fertile valley, home to around 150 wineries ranging from slick big-name producers to small-scale boutique bottlers.

Your day amongst the vines will take you to some of the region’s finest wineries, from stylish and contemporary to marvellously historic, relaxed and fun. Generous tasting times at award-winning Tulloch and Brokenwood Wines will allow you to savour the full range of Hunter Valley offerings. At the conclusion of the wine tastings, you’ll enjoy lunch at Twine Restaurant.

Tour duration (including travel time) is approximately 7 hours.

Recommended Fitness Level: Low – required to climb coach stairs with walking and standing for short periods.

Please note: It is recommended guests bring a hat and sunscreen.

  • Port Stephens by Land

Port Stephens’ sun-soaked beaches, stunning sand dunes and beautiful waterways are essential east coast highlights. After breakfast on board, the Great Southern pulls into old-time Maitland Station, from where it’s a relaxed one-hour coach ride to Anna Bay, home to the impressive Stockton Sand Dunes.

Soaring to an impressive 30m high and 1km wide in some places, these colossal sand hills are the largest mobile dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. A guided 4WD excursion is the best way to experience the beaches and dunes. After the 4WD tour, you’ll be coached to nearby Nelson Bay Golf Club to savour fresh local produce for a platter-style shared lunch.

Tour duration (including travel time) is approximately 7 hours.

Recommended Fitness Level: Moderate – the 4WD tour is bumpy and may not be suitable for people with some injuries or mobility restrictions. The vehicles are not wheelchair accessible.

Please Note: It is recommended guests bring comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen and water.

  • Port Stephens by Sea

Port Stephens is a natural world stage, encompassing beautiful beaches, stunning sand dunes and clear waterways, a true highlight of the east coast. After breakfast on board, the Great Southern pulls into old-time Maitland Station, from where it’s a relaxed one-hour coach ride to the marina at Nelson Bay, just east of Port Stephens.

Here you’ll enjoy a relaxed cruise on the bay, with the chance to spot playful bottlenose dolphins in their glorious natural habitat. Following a pleasant morning on board the 78ft catamaran, you’ll be coached to nearby Nelson Bay Golf Club to savour fresh local produce for a platter-style lunch.

Tour duration (including travel time) is approximately 7 hours.

Recommended Fitness Level: Moderate – the vessel has steep steps to board and access the top deck and is not wheelchair accessible.

Please Note: It is recommended guests bring non-slip, flat shoes (no high heels permitted), a hat, sunscreen, water, a wind jacket and warm clothes depending on the weather. The vessel is not wheelchair accessible.

  • Newcastle Explorer

Newcastle is an offbeat boutique city that is anything but ordinary, where creative energy and heritage architecture collide with surf beaches and a hard-edged industrial legacy. Take a day to discover the many charms of Australia’s second-oldest city. After breakfast on board, the train will pull into Maitland Station, from where you’ll travel by coach to Queens Wharf on the waterfront in ‘Newy’.

There’s enough here to keep you busy all day: the marina, ferry dock, cafes, restaurants, pub, renovated train station and boutique shops. But an easy-going 60-minute guided Newcastle walking tour will give you a broader sense of the city, finishing with an à la carte lunch overlooking Newcastle Harbour. In the afternoon, enjoy some free time at the museum or in town.

Tour duration (including travel time) is approximately 7 hours.

Recommended Fitness Level: Moderate – this walking and coach tour suits people with most abilities. Guests must be able to navigate coach stairs and stand and walk for 1 hour. The tour is slow-paced.

Please Note: It is recommended guests bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and water. Wheelchair access is possible as the route can be altered accordingly.

Hunter Valley helicopter experience optional upgrade – A$235 per person (limited availability)

Tailor-made for Great Southern guests, this is an opportunity to take to the skies and get a bird’s-eye view of the Hunter Valley. Enjoy wine tasting at award-winning Brokenwood Wines before being transferred to Twine Restaurant, overlooking some of the oldest vineyards in the region. While you are waiting to board your helicopter experience, savour a unique schnapps tasting.

This 15-minute Hunter Valley helicopter flight showcases the best of the wine region and beyond. See the myriad vines, rolling green hills and changing soil that make the Hunter Valley unique. Highlights along the way include the Hunter Valley Gardens, Broken Back Range and more. Gliding over the Broken Back Range, you’ll admire Pokolbin State Forest and the surrounding valleys.

Don’t forget your camera and capture some great shots as the landscape shifts from vineyards to ridgeline to bush. During the flight, your pilot will share the region’s rich history.

Tour duration (including travel time) is approximately 7 hours.

Recommended Fitness Level: Low – guests must be able to board coaches and the helicopter without assistance. Weight restrictions of 130kg per person apply.

Please Note: It is highly recommended that guests bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen.

Please Note: Luxury Escapes will confirm Off Train Experience preferences by email after booking. Off Train Experiences are reviewed yearly and subject to change. Optional upgrades will be available to purchase closer to the time of travel.

Transfers

  • Arrival and departure transfers to and from your accommodation are not included unless otherwise stated in your Luxury Escapes package. Guests are responsible for making their own way to the designated Great Southern check-in location in Brisbane and arranging onward transportation following arrival in Adelaide.
  • For the southbound Great Southern journey, Gold and Gold Premium guests check in at The Hills of Rivermakers, Brisbane, before transferring by complimentary coach to the rail departure terminal. Check-in closes at 8.45am, with the first coach transfers departing at approximately 9.15am. Guests should allow sufficient time to arrive and complete check-in.
  • At the conclusion of the journey, the Great Southern arrives in Adelaide, South Australia. Guests are responsible for arranging their onward travel or transfer from the designated arrival point unless a transfer is specifically included in their package.
  • Check-in locations, departure and arrival times, transfer arrangements and terminal details are subject to change. Guests should refer to their final travel documentation for confirmed information prior to departure.

Packing for your Train Journey:

  • Please note, whilst travelling on the train, larger pieces of luggage will be checked in and placed in the luggage carriage and will only be available for collection at the end of the journey. It is advised guests pack a carry-on sized luggage and/or a duffel bag to have onboard during the rail journey.
  • Make sure you pack your essentials into the luggage you’ll have with you in your cabin. This includes toiletries – although shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and soap are provided – and any medication you may need. If you’re a light sleeper, you may want to bring some earplugs, too – like all trains, the Great Southern has its own distinct soundtrack.
  • For more information, visit the Journey Beyond website.

Travelling Companions

  • If you are travelling with others and would like to request cabins located close together, please provide details as soon as possible. While cabin location requests cannot be guaranteed, your preference will be passed on to the operator where available.
