The trip was neither luxury or ultimate. Our guide was amazing, nothing was too much trouble for her. She was so happy, friendly and quite knowledgeable however my issue was accommodation. I had expected the amount we paid for this trip which was quite a bit more than others we looked at would have offered reasonable hotels. Most were not well located and rooms quite basic. In one instance we were given rooms so small we could hardly open our bags and the beds were futons (essentially a mattress on the floor). All but 2 of our tour were over 60 so this didn’t go down very well. In one hotel it wasn’t even a standard room but a compact room where a suitcase would need to be kept in the hallway near the door as it was so small . Only a few were located centrally and the others in areas where there was limited dining options or in areas where there was little open in the evening in walking distance . Our entire group was disappointed with the standard and location of hotels.

We recently returned from the Ultimate Japan tour. Whilst Japan was amazing, the tour itself could have been better. The hotels were all comfortable with excellent breakfasts. Unfortunately, our tour guide did not have the necessary experience and it showed. He struggled with group management and imparting information. A flag, or microphone and headsets, would have been useful so we could see our guide when he got far ahead, or when not all group members manage to cross the road together. As our guide was unfamiliar with the areas and attractions we visited, he was unable to provide us with commentary about where we were, or the significance of things we saw, and we had to look them up ourselves later. We would have loved to learn more about the history and culture of Japan, rather than simply be told to ‘meet back at the bus in 1 hour’. It would also have been nice to know how long it would take to go through attractions, and to have greater time allocated to popular sites.

Overall we enjoyed the tour and the route however day 2 was a Saturday of a long weekend which severely negatively impacted the first three days with huge crowds and hours stuck on the bus in traffic jams. We arrived late into our accomodation in the dark and could only go and find dinner. No time to see the area We think it would be better to start the day earlier so arrive in daylight that evening as some very long days on the road. A seat rotation policy and travellers introduction would have have helped to connect the group Make sure everyone knows that you are walking to and from the stations when leaving Kyoto and arriving at Hiroshima as it was pouring with rain as we walked in Kyoto and some people did not have access to their rain coats. The standard of the hotels is variable and not what we would call luxury with one hotel room having the window completely frosted so we could not see out. We have never had this in any hotel in the world and was totally unacceptable
