Hujambo, and welcome to Kenya! The safari capital of the world, Nairobi is one of the only cities in the world that boasts a national park within its bounds, positioning city life side-by-side with the country’s renowned wildlife.
Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), you will be transferred to your hotel for check-in and the remainder of your day at leisure.
Travel time: Driving – approx. 30 minutes
Arrival & Transfers:
Please book your flights to arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) at any time today. Airport transfers are included on the first day of your tour. Your transfer will meet you on arrival and take you to your hotel. Check-in on Day 1 is at 12pm.
Gather your energy over breakfast, then travel across Kenya’s rolling highlands to the wild and rugged landscapes of Maasai Mara National Reserve. Home to the coveted ‘Big Five’ safari animals – the lion, rhino, Cape buffalo, African leopard and African elephant – Maasai Mara has earned its reputation as one of the great wildlife destinations.
After checking in at your safari lodge, you’ll have time to spend freely in this scenic locale.
Travel time: Driving – approx. five hours
Wake to the promise of two full days exploring the park in search of the ‘Big Five’.
Delve deep into Maasai Mara’s famously diverse ecosystem, with an astonishing variety of wildlife to see – over 450 species of animals on record. Perhaps you’ll catch a glimpse of lazing lions, basking in the African sun, or watchful crocodiles in the waterways. Towering giraffes and waddling warthogs wander about, while an abundance of antelope species can be found throughout the reserve.
With approximately 570 species of birds, around 50 of which are birds of prey, there’s plenty of excitement from the treetops to the skies as well.
Perhaps its most famous wildlife spectacle is the jaw-dropping Great Migration of wildebeest, zebras and other travelling herds. Every year between July and October, these incredible creatures return to their breeding grounds by crossing from the Serengeti to Maasai Mara, then circle back round to do it all over again.
The sheer scale of their migration – some 1.2 million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra – is perhaps the world’s best demonstration of the circle of life, and an indescribably moving experience for nature-lovers across the globe.
After breakfast, it’s time to depart Maasai Mara in search of new and exciting wonders, taking your flight transfer to Amboseli National Park, connecting via Nairobi.
Dominated by the magnificent presence of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, Amboseli is one of Kenya’s oldest and most famous parks. Endlessly panoramic yet comparatively compact, it is dotted with emerald-green swamps in which great herds of elephant wallow, half-submerged in the papyrus grasses. In the afternoon, a game drive will introduce you to the lush swamps of this lively landscape.
Travel time: Driving – approx. 90 minutes / Flight – approx. 2.5 hours
Spend the day adventuring through Amboseli with morning and afternoon game drives. Reaching toward the heavens, Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest peak – stands watch over the vast lands of Amboseli, a reliable compass point for your travels.
From the dried lakebed of prehistoric Lake Amboseli to the rolling savannahs and lush green swamps, these plains are alive with animal action. Slender jackals and spotted hyenas roam the grasslands, while pensive olive baboons and vervet monkeys watch right back. With your expert guide, you’ll seek all the thrilling fauna for which Amboseli is renowned.
Today, set your sights on Tanzania as you cross the border at Namanga and take your onward transfer to Karatu. Close by Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park, this city is Tanzania’s popular hub for all things wildlife.
Here, check in at your hotel for a restful evening ahead of your spectacular safari day tomorrow.
Travel time: Driving – approx. 5.5 hours
This morning, drive down into the Ngorongoro Crater for a closer look at the abundant wildlife of this supremely photogenic paradise. Spend a full morning game-viewing, watching for prides of lions, herds of Cape buffalo, mesmerising impala and commanding rhinoceros.
The largest intact caldera in the world, Ngorongoro Crater boasts an endless array of native animals to spot, from the cheetah to the leopard and mischievous hyena. Among myriad chattering birds, round out your game drive with a picnic lunch by the lively hippo pool.
This afternoon, proceed to Ndutu at the edges of Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, where you’ll check in for the evening.
Please note: Accommodation for Day 8–10 will vary among three options, dependent on season, in order to ensure travellers have the best opportunity for experiencing the Great Migration.
Travel time: Driving – approx. four hours
A year-round hotspot for wildlife, Ndutu is the perfect place to experience the staggering spectacle of the Great Migration. Following as these intrepid wildebeest and zebra move along their annual journey through the Serengeti, you’re sure for an unforgettable show. And where the herds wander, the impressive predators are never far away.
Over the next two days, set out on full-day game drives, watching for prowling lions, cheetahs and hyenas. Setting the scene for this epic display of nature are the distinctive kopjes of the Serengeti – worn-down granite outcrops that rise like rocky islands from the plains.
Lunch is served in the middle of the bush, ensuring you don’t miss a moment of the action. No matter the season, you’re sure for a one-of-a-kind look at the humbling habits of the animal kingdom.
Later, gather around the campfire as the sun dips below the horizon, settling in to share stories with your fellow travellers under the starry African sky.
Please note: Accommodation for Day 8–10 will vary among three options, dependent on season, in order to ensure travellers have the best opportunity for experiencing the Great Migration.
Wave goodbye to the spectacular Serengeti as you set off for Tarangire National Park. Named for the Tarangire River – the park’s far-reaching central lifeline – Tarangire contains a complex ecosystem of flora and fauna, with a plethora of exhilarating animals to behold and the ancient baobab ‘tree of life’ found throughout the plains.
Check in at your safari lodge and get settled for a peaceful evening ahead of another big day tomorrow.
Travel time: Driving – approx. six hours
Spend your day getting to know the beautiful Tarangire National Park with morning and evening game drives. Watch once more for the African elephant, graceful gazelle, and the striking silhouette of the oryx, as well as a plethora of birds such as eye-catching hornbills and hoopoes.
In stark contrast to the larger-than-life presence of many mammals, there is wonder to behold in the park’s population of smaller creatures too. Let your guide point out the colour-changing agama lizard or the scurrying hyrax.
This morning, check out of your Tarangire accommodation and take your included transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where your East African adventure concludes.
Departure & Transfers:
Checkout on your final day is at 9am. Please book your flights to depart from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) after 2pm. Airport transfers are included on the last day of your tour. Your transfer will meet you at your hotel and take you to the airport.
