Rise early this morning for your 6.45am pick-up, and set off on the approximately three-hour journey through the lush rainforest hinterland to Kakadu National Park.
Along the way, you’ll travel east along the Arnhem Highway, passing through the fruit orchards of Humpty Doo and the bird-filled wetlands of the Adelaide River. Stop for a cruise across the majestic Mary River, catching sight of the region’s extraordinary wildlife – including ferocious saltwater crocodiles – before continuing to Kakadu.
The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park has it all – thunderous waterfalls, rugged cliff faces, sprawling bush and countless ancient Indigenous Australian stories. Visit the Mamukala Wetlands and witness striking birdlife, including magpie geese, cormorants, purple swamp hens and kingfishers.
Next up, stop at the Bowali Visitor Centre for a rundown on the hows and whys of the park, before checking in to your accommodation, the truly unique Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel, located just outside the town of Jabiru. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure – take a dip in the hotel’s wonderfully reptile-free outdoor pool, or savour a little Kakadu bush tucker at Escarpment Restaurant and Bar.
After breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive to the East Alligator River region, the gateway to Arnhem Land. Enjoy a fascinating Indigenous-guided cruise along the smooth-flowing East Alligator River, spot languid crocodiles and take in the stories of the local area.
Next, travel to Ubirr, an extraordinary collection of spectacular Indigenous Australian rock art sites. Walk the kilometre-long circular walking track, taking in every incredible piece along the way – and if you’re feeling fit, head up to the summit of the escarpment and take in sweeping views across the Magela floodplain.
After a delicious light lunch, visit a local Indigenous arts centre, where you’ll enjoy the opportunity to see local artists at work. Round out the day with a visit to the stone-swept Nourlangie region, where more artwork awaits – a stunning glimpse into the culture of the local Bininj/Mungguy people.
Another glorious morning in the Top End awaits – at 6.45am, you will be transferred to Jabiru Airport, where you’ll take to the skies on a 60-minute scenic flight over the region’s jaw-dropping landscapes. Soar over ancient rock escarpments, floodplains and twisting rivers, enjoying live commentary from your pilot as you glide across these incredible landscapes.
Following your morning flight, depart Kakadu National Park and travel approximately three hours to the town of Batchelor, gateway to Litchfield National Park’s must-see waterfalls, dreamlike termite mounds and mighty sandstone pillars. After stopping for morning tea, head to Wangi Falls, a massive swimming hole surrounded by gentle grassland, and the perfect chance for a dip. Finally, travel to the astonishing Florence Falls and admire the thunderous cascades from the waterfall’s viewing platform.
Head for Darwin, arriving in the early evening, where you will check in to your final evening of accommodation and enjoy the night at leisure.
