Additional information
- Traffic rules
- All traffic coming from the right has the right of way, so never cycle through a red light or pedestrian areas, even though you will see many Amsterdam cyclists doing just that. Disregarding the rules could cost you a fine of EUR 50
- Stay on the designated bicycle lane or track on the right-hand side of the road, marked out by white lines and bike symbols. Do not cycle on footpaths, shopping streets, pavements, or highways
- Keep the cycle-free areas in mind. In front of Central Station and down the Leidsestraat is a pedestrian-only area. Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein, and Waterlooplein are also cycle-free areas
- Never hit the brakes too hard out of the blue
- Never leave your bike unlocked. Lock your bike to a bike rack using two locks: One through the back wheel and one around the frame through the front wheel. Don’t park your bike in front of Central Station or on Dam Square. Do not leave anything behind on your bicycle
- Do not park on the road or in the path of pedestrians. Your bike will be removed if you don’t park it in the designated parking spots that are everywhere in town
- Look before you leap, so don’t turn or stop suddenly. Don’t dart out from between parked vehicles; let others know what you’re planning to do, use hand signals, and make eye contact. Be aware of trams and taxis (They often have the right of way), trucks, mopeds, and of course, other cyclists
- It is not allowed to hold your phone in your hand while cycling in the Netherlands. Avoid a fine for using your phone on your bike and buy a universal phone holder What to bring
- Valid ID / Passport (with 6 months validity)
