Location

The standard tour begins in Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and finishes in Kota Kinabalu (BKI). The extended tour begins and ends in Kuala Lumpur (KUL).

Your tour includes an internal flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Sandakan, Borneo and from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu.

International flights are not included in your package and must be purchased separately. Please do NOT book your flights until your tour is confirmed.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Selamat Datang: welcome to Kuala Lumpur! Upon arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), you will be met by your driver and transferred by private vehicle to your luxury hotel located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur (or KL, as it’s commonly known). As the capital of Malaysia, this is the largest city in the country, with dizzying high-rise buildings, world-class hotels, glitzy shopping malls and local and international cuisine on offer.

You will be staying in one of the city’s most popular hotels: Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur. Situated in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s bustling commercial centre, this luxurious sanctuary surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens is best described as an oasis in the heart of the capital.

Later this afternoon, set off on a walking tour of Kuala Lumpur, followed by a welcome cocktail at a popular high-rise bar boasting impressive views over the iconic Petronas Towers.

Day 2: Malacca

Today, travel to Malacca, a former colonial outpost and a true melting pot of cultures and influences. Prior to the 16th century, the city was a prosperous sultanate and trading centre drawing ships from the Middle East, India and China. The city became a settlement of the Portuguese followed by the Dutch, who turned Malacca into one of the great trading ports of Asia.

Spend a full day exploring the city’s remarkable history and its most significant buildings. Learn about the Chinese influences here with a visit to Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, dedicated to the Buddhist deity of mercy, Guanyin. Not far from the temple is Jonker Street, brimming with antique shops that recall more than 300 years of Malacca’s fusion of influences.

Enjoy a traditional lunch at a Nyonya-Baba restaurant, then visit Dutch Square, which attests to the Dutch colonial influence of the 17th century. Dating to 1650, the bright maroon buildings in the square are the earliest examples of Dutch architecture in Southeast Asia. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the ruins of St Paul’s Church and A Famosa, the remains of a Portuguese fortress and the earliest surviving example of European architecture in Asia.

Your visit ends at Malacca Straits Mosque, which is built on stilts over the water, earning it the name ‘the Floating Mosque’. After returning to KL, the rest of the afternoon is spent at your leisure.

Day 3: Kuala Lumpur – Sandakan

This morning, explore the hidden alleys and shops of Kuala Lumpur, trying traditional street food along the way. Walk the old streets of KL, exploring beyond the tall buildings with their luxe exteriors, and get to know the Malaysian way of life and the city’s history from a local’s perspective. Return to your hotel to freshen up, before your transfer to the airport for your flight to Sandakan in Borneo.

Welcome to Sandakan, the gateway to Borneo’s wildlife. The city was once the capital of British-administered North Borneo and today is a busy port on the east coast of Sabah, East Malaysia. This port city is also a culinary paradise with amazing seafood and local delicacies unique to the cultural mix of people who have settled here over the centuries.

Enjoy the evening at your leisure as you settle into Sabah Hotel, recognised as one of the finest hotels in Sandakan. Set in the verdant beauty of an old-growth tropical rain forest, the hotel boasts amenities such as a swimming pool, recreation centre and a choice of dining outlets.

Day 4: Sandakan

After breakfast, set off to enjoy a full day amid nature. The first stop is the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC). Founded in 2008, this wildlife conservation centre and research facility aims to improve the welfare and rehabilitation of the Malayan sun bear, a reclusive bear species standing just 70 centimetres tall. It also works to educate and raise public awareness about the plight of sun bears and the importance of working to conserve this highly endangered species.

Afterwards, take a short walk to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre (SORC). Get up close and witness these playful creatures in their natural habitat as your naturalist guide gives you an understanding of the plight of orangutans in today’s world, and the initiatives the rehabilitation centre has in place to ensure their ongoing survival and successful release back into the wild. You’ll also get the opportunity to see feeding time, before transferring to the Rainforest Discovery Centre.

Take a stroll over the suspension bridge and finish with the only Canopy Walk (147 metres long) in Sandakan. Your guide will highlight the varied birdlife and a vast diversity of flora that is endemic to this region. Then, continue to Sepilok Nature Resort for lunch, before a drive to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary.

The evening is at your leisure.

Day 5: Sandakan – Kinabatangan River

This morning, after breakfast, you will be transferred to the jetty in Sandakan for a cruise along the Kinabatangan River. Rising in the mountains of southwestern Sabah, the river is 560 kilometres long, making it the second-longest river system in Malaysia. Soak up the spectacular scenery as you pass pristine mangrove forests and keep a keen eye out for wildlife.

Arrive at Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort. Set within the ancient rainforest of the Lower Kinabatangan River and surrounded by pristine freshwater swamps and mangrove forests, the resort is an exclusive nature retreat, far from the major cities and tourist sights of Sabah. Take time to relax or explore the surrounding area on the nature boardwalk before an afternoon cruise in search of proboscis monkeys, birds, reptiles and other wildlife.

As night falls, the glittering fireflies emerge among the mangrove trees. Return to the lodge for dinner before a guided night stroll around the lodge’s nature boardwalk.

Day 6: Kinabatangan River

Today. rise early for an unforgettable morning cruise to observe the area’s wildlife while enjoying a cup of coffee. Cruise to the nearby Pitas Oxbow Lake to explore the area and enjoy a picnic breakfast while admiring the natural surroundings. You will have the chance to visit a local fishing village before returning to the hotel.

After lunch, you will be free to enjoy an afternoon at leisure before meeting early evening for another river cruise along the Kinabatangan River. Return to the lodge for dinner.

Day 7: Kinabatangan River – Kota Kinabalu

This morning, enjoy time at leisure to explore the nature boardwalk around the lodge. Look out for any signs of movement in the trees as wild orangutans, silver leaf monkeys and many colourful endemic birds are often seen in this area.

Later this morning, take a cruise back to Sandakan to be transferred to the airport for the flight to Kota Kinabalu. This bustling waterfront city is surrounded by off-shore coral islands, forest-covered hills, scenic rivers and, of course, Mt. Kinabalu – the highest peak in Southeast Asia.

A private transfer will drop you to the luxurious Shangri-La Rasa Ria – a stunning beachfront resort surrounded by 400 acres of tropical forest. This afternoon is yours to enjoy the resort facilities before heading to a traditional seafood restaurant for dinner.

Day 8: Kota Kinabalu

Day 9: Kota Kinabalu – Penang

After breakfast, be transferred to the airport for your included flight to Penang. The island of Penang is located off the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia and is considered one of Asia’s most culturally diverse destinations. Home to George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site famed for its diverse culture and dubbed Malaysia’s food capital, Penang is well known for its amazing culinary scene, palm-fringed beaches and cool hills that tempt you to explore further.

On arrival, you will be transferred to one of Penang’s premier beachfront resorts, Shangri-La Rasa Sayang, Penang, where the rest of the evening is at leisure.

Day 10: Penang

This morning, explore a working tropical spice garden with a guided tour of this living museum of spices and plants. Enjoy a cup of tea at the bamboo garden before taking part in a hands-on cooking class. Then sit down to enjoy a lavish lunch of the delicious dishes you have prepared.

Today is all yours to spend as you please. Day 12: Penang – Ipoh

This morning, journey to Ipoh, approx. a 2.5-hour drive. Rich with incredible scenery, unique temples, colonial architecture, street art and good food, this town is one of Malaysia’s best-kept secrets.

Explore the town’s street art on a tour with street food tasting, walking through history on the heritage trail that winds its way through a number of historic buildings (including Ipoh Railway Station, Ipoh Town Hall, Birch Memorial Tower, Ho Yan Hor Museum and the Concubine Lanes), all while picking up local snacks along the way. After lunch, travel to your luxury hot springs retreat, where the rest of the afternoon is at leisure to relax in your private outdoor plunge pool and hot tub.

Day 13: Ipoh – Kuala Lumpur

This morning, journey to Kuala Lumpur, stopping en route at the famous Tempurung Cave, one of the largest limestone caves in Malaysia.

Enjoy a guided walk to the impressive Golden Flowstone, a smoothed stone cascade that appears golden when the river is flowing. Along the way, admire the stalagmites and stalactites on the walls and ceiling.

Arrive in Kuala Lumpur late this afternoon, with the evening at leisure.

AMENDMENTS & CHANGES

7-Day Change of Mind ‘No Questions Asked’ Refund Guarantee: Things don’t always work out. Our 7-day Change of Mind Guarantee is there to help. Bookings (except for cruise bookings and flights which are subject to the cancellation terms of the relevant supplier) may be cancelled with a full refund provided that cancellation occurs strictly within 7 days from the date of purchase and provided that the cancellation is made no less than 90 days prior to the departure date.

Name Change or Corrections

Following the 7-Day Change of Mind Guarantee period,

  • Name corrections may incur a fee.
  • Name changes are not permitted.

Date Changes

  • You can enjoy one free date change on selected tours up until 90 days prior to your original travel date (subject to seasonal surcharges or package upgrades). Changes can be made via your ‘My Escapes’ account, or by contacting the Tours Concierge Team at tours@luxuryescapes.com. Any subsequent date changes will incur a fee of A$250 per person plus any further costs that may apply.
  • The Tours Concierge team will advise if the change is confirmed via email and provide an invoice for the following, subject to fees from third-party suppliers, air and rail travel and hotels (cabins on cruises).
  • Alternatively, you can cancel your tour booking up until 90 days prior to original travel date, with credit towards future travel for any Limited Time Lux Exclusive accommodation, tour or cruise package, excludes flights. Additional charges for date changes that result in a higher value will be charged to your account. Credit must be used within 12 months of issue date. After this time bookings are non-refundable except in accordance with our Refund Policy.
  • Date changes do not apply to flights booked with Luxury Escapes. Flight fulfilment is provided by the airline(s) selected at the time of finalising the booking. For your air travel, you are bound by the terms and conditions and fare rules of the selected airline(s).

Covid-19 Related Cancellations

For all new bookings from 13 October 2020, if you can’t travel as a direct result of border closures or Government-imposed travel restrictions that directly impact your booking, Luxury Escapes will:

  • allow you to change the dates of your tour,
  • offer you a credit for another tour, cruise or accommodation offer, less any third-party costs that Luxury Escapes can’t recover (including from airlines and tour providers), or
  • refund the full value of your tour, less any third-party costs that Luxury Escapes can’t recover (including from airlines and tour providers)

  • A valid passport with a minimum validity of 6 months beyond your return travel date is required for all passengers (including children and infants).

Photo ID

  • For all international tours, a digital copy of your passport must be provided for each guest at least 120 days prior to your tour departure.

  • Important: The hotel, transportation and/or destination you are travelling to may have health, insurance and vaccination requirements in place. Please ensure you stay up to date with any requirements prior to your departure.

Flights:

  • Select economy-class airfares are included in your package, departing Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan; Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu; and Kota Kinabalu to Penang.
  • Preferred airline seating is the responsibility of the passenger. For any specific airline seat reservations, contact the airline with the booking number included in your tour confirmation.

Tour Baggage Restrictions

  • Please note that baggage restrictions apply to your included flights
  • Passengers are permitted 1 piece of checked-in baggage with a maximum weight of 20kg.
  • Passengers are permitted one carry-on piece with a maximum weight of 7kg.

Transfers

  • Arrival and departure transfers are only available on the first and last day. Please note, arrival and departure transfers are included between the hours of 6am and 6pm. If you arrive outside these hours a supplement may apply. Please contact the Luxury Escapes Tours Concierge team on tours@luxuryescapes.com for further information.
  • If booking a Twin-Room Package, transfers are based on two people sharing the one vehicle. If you are arriving on different flights at different times, a supplement will be charged for two separate vehicles.
  • Please note ‘Private Transfers’ refers to transfers that are exclusive for your Luxury Escapes group and may be shared amongst other members of your group if arriving on the same flight or another flight arriving within a 30-minute window.
  • Flight details must be advised at least 30 days prior to your scheduled departure date. Failure to provide your confirmed flight details within this time period will result in forfeiting your transfer.

Flight Schedule Changes and/or Cancellations

  • Please note that the rules governing your flight purchase are different from the terms and conditions of your hotel, tour, or cruise purchase. See Flights terms and conditions here.
  • Your hotel, tour, or cruise booking cannot be changed or cancelled in the event of unavoidable flight schedule changes or cancellations and will be subject to the terms of that purchase.
  • Further, your right to a change or cancellation of a flight is strictly governed by the terms and conditions of the specific airfare you purchased and as determined by the relevant airline carrier.
  • We will, however, make every effort to work with airlines and suppliers in order to provide you with the best alternative options available.

Porterage

On occasion, porterage is not included, therefore at times you may be expected to handle your own luggage where help may not be available. Please refer to inclusions if porterage is included.

Tipping

Tipping and gratuities are not included in the package and are at your own discretion. As a guide, approximately US$10 – US$15 per person, per day, is the industry standard.

Fitness Requirements

Travellers acknowledge that they are required to have a good level of health and fitness to undertake the activities in this tour. Further, travellers acknowledge and agree that neither Luxury Escapes nor the tour provider will be able to provide medical or other assistance in the event that they are unable to complete any aspect of the tour as a result of their health or physical condition (nor is Luxury Escapes liable for any loss, damage, expense, injury or death arising from such).

Dietary Requirements

In most cases Luxury Escapes can cater for special dietary requirements but please note that on occasion, this may not be possible due to location, lack of availability of ingredients, and other extenuating circumstances. It is always advised to carry supplies with you.

Any dietary requirements must be received by Luxury Escapes at least 30 days prior to your scheduled departure date. Failure to provide these details by this date may result in an inability to cater for your requirements.

Valued Up To

The value and comparative savings have been determined based on published rack rates and the value of inclusions. Please be advised that rack rates may not be reflective of actual rates being charged, dependent on the timing and manner of your booking and therefore are only indicative of the level of saving.

Itinerary Amendments & Changes

Occasionally our itineraries are updated prior to departure to incorporate improvements stemming from past travellers’ feedback as well as updates from our ground operators. Please note that while we operate successful tours in this region throughout the year, some changes may be necessary due to inclement weather, public holidays, common seasonal changes to timetables and transport routes, and unforeseen circumstances. This can happen with little notice so please be prepared for modifications to the route. The order and timing of included activities may also vary from time to time.

In the event of a change in itinerary (due to safety or events outside of our control) which results in cancellation or change fees in respect of flights (or other parts of your travel) we will notify you as soon as practicable. You will be responsible for any associated costs or will otherwise have the right to a refund (less any costs incurred or paid to third parties).

Surcharges

After completing your booking, your tour cost may be subject to additional surcharges as a result of factors beyond the control of Luxury Escapes. Where the cost of delivering your selected tour materially increases between the time of purchase and delivery, Luxury Escapes reserves the right to increase the balance due. Increases may be in relation to, but not limited to, currency fluctuations, taxes, airfares, fuel surcharges or tour costs where those costs have increased for similar reasons. A material increase will be considered once in excess of 10% of the package price.

Any prices quoted exclude specific costs/measures which may be introduced at a later stage as a result of Government changes due to Covid-19 health and safety restrictions. Luxury Escapes will inform its guests of these changes as soon as possible, these additional charges will be passed on by Luxury Escapes to the guest.
