Your first stop is the incredible city of Avila, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded in the 11th century to protect Spanish territories from the Moors, these formidable fortifications still encircle the old town today. Built in part from stones reused from earlier structures, the walls have an average thickness of three metres. In the late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Salamanca, a University City also granted World Heritage status.
