Today, head for Portoroz, a hybrid city of cosmopolitan promenades and romantic streets enshrined in rich history.
After a brief stop at Kranjska Gora – an alpine valley renowned for the hospitality and friendliness of the local people – it's time to cross the Vrsic Pass towards Soca Valley. Built for military purposes in World War I, this winding mountain road will take you to some of the highest points in the country while providing you with the most awe-inspiring views Slovenia has to offer. On arrival in the Soca Valley, take time to admire the Soca river — renowned for its turquoise waters set against a backdrop of imposing limestone mountains, dense forests and lush meadows.
Lunch is enjoyed on arrival in Kobarid — the culinary capital of the Primorska region – before visiting the Kobarid Museum, dedicated to events that occurred during World War I on the Isonzo Front.
Following the road alongside romantic villages, vibrant orchards, sprawling cypress trees and rolling hillsides lined with vines, you will soon arrive in Goriska Brda — often referred to as the 'Tuscany of Slovenia'. Here, halfway between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, the locals take their wines very seriously. The region is made up of hundreds of smaller vineyards, harvesting local varieties such as tokaj (white), rebula (white), sauvignonasse (white) and merlot (red). While here, visit a handpicked winery for a delicious tasting.
Following a full day’s adventure, you will finally arrive at Portoroz — part of the Slovenian riviera. A charming coastal destination, Portoroz has a long history as a luxury locale. After check-in, why not experience the buzz at a local bar or relax at one of the spas that source water from natural thermal springs?
Please Note: Guests will travel approx. 280km today.
Following breakfast this morning, it's time to take the scenic route down Slovenia's coastline to Koper. Stroll through streets that still show off the city's five centures of Venetian rule before continuing to Izola. Here, the oldest part of the town rests upon what once used to be an island – hence the city's name ('isola' is Latin for 'island'). You are then off to Piran, one of the most beautiful Slovenian towns. Enjoy Piran's typical Mediterranean feel and medieval architecture while absorbing its rich cultural heritage.
Later, you will arrive in Secovlje to visit the renowned Secovlje Salt Pans, the northernmost salt flats in the Mediterranean. Established in 804, salt is still produced here traditionally with classical salt-pan methods and tools, helping it retain its special taste and exceptional characteristics. After, you will visit a local, family-owned olive grove to discover the secrets of organically produced olive oil. Enjoy a tour and guided premium olive oil tasting before returning to Portoroz.
Today, the choice is yours: enjoy free time in Portoroz or embark on a full-day tour of the area (own expense). At Postojna Cave, circle underneath the unique Karst underground world of beautiful formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Then, explore the impregnable medieval Predjama Castle, which has been perched in the middle of a 123-meter-high cliff for more than 800 years. After, it's onto the Lipica stud farm, home to the world-famous Lipizzaner horses.
Alternatively, explore Portoroz at your own pace before reconvening with your travel companions this evening to toast to great memories and new friends at a farewell dinner.
