Day 9: Wyndham, Australia
Wyndham is a small settlement with the spirit of a Kimberley outback township. Established in 1886 with the Halls Creek gold rush, today Wyndham has a population of roughly 900 people and still operates as a port city. Located on the Cambridge Gulf, where several rivers converge, Wyndham is also a gateway to the peaceful, tree-lined Ord River.
An included cruise will take you gliding up the Ord River to Lake Kununurra, enjoying expert commentary and observing wildlife along the way. Stop for lunch with time to relax, before resuming the cruise in the heart of the Carlton Gorge, lined with the stunning red cliffs for which the Kimberley is famous. Arrive at the foot of the Ord Top Dam and discover how this amazing structure was designed, before transferring to the awaiting coach for a drive across the Ord Top Dam wall for a scenic view of Lake Argyle.
Visit the Lake Argyle Resort, the site of the original workers’ camp during the construction of the Ord Top Dam, and stop at the Argyle Homestead Museum. Sit back and relax for the scenic drive back to Kununurra and then onto Wyndham.
Please Note: Tour order may vary. There is a short walk off the boat to the lunch spot. There are six steps to navigate to reach the riverside camp, and another six steps to get to the bathroom facilities. There is also some short walking required through the Durack Homestead Museum and grounds, although this is at the guest’s discretion.

The Hunter River Region is home to an immense mangrove system surrounded by soaring red sandstone cliffs. Over the next two days, you’ll explore the narrow channels on two included tours: set off on a Zodiac cruise and then experience the landscapes up close on a hiking expedition. The environment provides shelter to numerous bird species, mudskippers, fiddler crabs and the infamous saltwater crocodile – the most aggressive crocodile species known to man. For those looking to explore some of the Kimberley’s vast interior, Naturalist Island at the mouth of the river has a stunning stretch of sandy beach that makes a perfect landing site for small helicopters.

Named in 1821 by Captain Phillip Parker King in commemoration of William Dampier’s visit in 1688, the area was first visited by pearlers in the late 1800s.
