Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Havana

Welcome to Havana! The largest island in the Caribbean, Cuba’s blend of diverse cultures, soulful streets and mojito-fuelled nightlife has been dazzling visitors for decades. Havana, Cuba’s spectacular capital, offers guests an outre art scene, countless museums and unforgettable views of the Caribbean Sea.

On arrival at Havana Jose Marti International Airport (HAV), you’ll be met by a tour representative and transferred to your authentic, premium casa guesthouse. ‘Mi casa es su casa’ – ‘my home is your home’ – has never been truer. Casa guesthouses provide the chance for travellers to stay in authentic home lodgings, cared for by locals – there’s no better way to experience extraordinary Cuban hospitality, and casa stays are some of the best quality accommodation the country has to offer.

Enjoy a day at leisure before a welcome meeting with your guides and other guests at 6pm. If you have the time, take a wander through colourful streets, past ancient brickwork and classic cars, and feel the sea breeze on your face – it’s impossible not to be swept up in Havana’s magical beauty.

Accommodation: Casa Cuarteles or similar

Optional Activities:

  • Fusterlandia (from EUR3, not including taxi charges)
  • Buena Vista Social Club with dinner (EUR65, not including taxi charges)
  • Buena Vista Social Club without dinner (EUR40, not including taxi charges)
  • Museum of the Revolution (from EUR5)
  • Cannon Ceremony (from EUR5, not including taxi charges)

Day 2: Havana

Founded in 1519, Havana has a long, romantic history, filled with colonial adventures, pirates, mobsters and more. After breakfast, enjoy a walking tour through Old Havana’s cobbled streets. Discover Cuba’s thrilling history as you stroll through this UNESCO World Heritage-listed district – learn about the capital’s nightly cannon-firing ritual and famed maniac ‘The Gentleman of Paris,’ discover why the city was such a perfect stopping point for treasure-filled Spanish galleons and more. Along the way, you’ll visit remarkably preserved fortresses, plazas and chapels, including the Plaza de Armas, Plaza San Francisco de Asis, Plaza Vieja and Plaza de la Catedral.

Enjoy lunch at Los Mercaderes, one of the finest restaurants in Cuba, set in a beautifully renovated old colonial house and hanging garden. This is the perfect chance to taste authentic Cuban food, surrounded by the beauty of Old Havana.

After lunch, sail through the streets on a classic car cruise around Havana. The importation of American vehicles was prohibited in Cuba in 1959 after the Cuban Revolution, effectively turning the country into a living museum for classic cars. Havana has managed to retain more than 60,000 vehicles from the 1950s and earlier. Swing past the white dome of El Capitolio, the National Theatre of Cuba, Revolution Square and the Malecon, a broad esplanade that stretches from Old Havana to the mouth of the Almendares River. There’s no better way to see and experience Havana’s soaring beauty.

In the evening, head to the iconic El Floridita – one of the most famous bars in the world and Ernest Hemingway’s favourite – for refreshment and photographs with the bar’s bronze statue of the legendary author. Legend has it that in the early 1930s, Hemingway stopped by El Floridita to use the restroom, and on his way out noticed the bartender pouring daquiris. Hemingway, who was notoriously fond of a drink, took one sip and exclaimed, ‘Not bad! But double the rum’. To this day, El Floridita still pours ice-cold Papa Hemingways, a tart mix of rum, grapefruit juice and maraschino. If you’re feeling brave, order the cocktail and take a sip of history.

Accommodation: Casa Cuarteles or similar

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 3: Havana

This morning, meet with a local chef and head to a nearby farm to collect fresh produce for this afternoon’s cooking class. After your excursion, return to the kitchen to learn how to prepare your authentic Cuban feast. Over the course of preparing, cooking and tasting your meal, learn about the culinary heritage of the island and the flavours that make Cuban cooking so spectacular.

Enjoy the afternoon at your leisure. Wander past ornate marble statues and striking Catholic iconography at the sprawling Necropolis Cristobal Colon, head to the Museum Nacional de Bellas Artes for a comprehensive introduction to Cuban art or savour sunset mojitos by the Malecon waterfront.

Accommodation: Casa Cuartreles or similar

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 4: Havana – Las Terrazas – Soroa

After a delicious breakfast, begin the hour-long journey to the idyllic mountain town of Soroa, stopping by the Las Terrazas nature reserve, tucked high in the Sierra del Rosario mountains. Visit a local coffee plantation at this UNESCO-listed lakeside community before continuing west.

Blessed with lush tropical forests, winding rivers and crashing waterfalls, Soroa is a jaw-droppingly beautiful natural gem nicknamed ‘The Rainbow of Cuba,’ for the way the light glistens spectacularly off the town’s waterways. The region’s high elevation and heavy rainfall make it a perfect environment for tall trees and orchids.

Explore the pathways, admire striking hillside views and walk amongst thousands of technicolour flowers at Soroa Orchid Garden before heading to a local paladar – a small, family-run restaurant – to enjoy a delicious home-cooked dinner.

Accommodation: Casa Dona Dunia or similar

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5: Soroa – Vinales

After breakfast, say goodbye to Soroa as you head further into the forest-clad mogotes (hills) towards the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Vinales Valley. Striking limestone formations and traditional tobacco farms await in the world-famous home of Cuban cigars. Enjoy breathtaking views of the valley before making your way to the spellbinding Mural de La Prehistoria. This mural, designed in 1961, was painted on the wall of the Pita Mogote over a span of four years and depicts giant snails, dinosaurs and early humans in a titanic splash of colour.

Enjoy lunch with a view – and, if you’d like, a cheeky pina colada – before enjoying an orientation walk through Vinales. The afternoon is spent with salsa lessons, the perfect preparation for the town’s vibrant nightlife and extraordinary local live music scene.

Accommodation: Casa China or similar

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 6: Vinales

After breakfast, explore the breathtaking natural surroundings of the village, an abundant producer of avocados, mangos, pineapples and tobacco. Watch oxen work the fields and smell the aroma of fresh tobacco in the air as you take a guided walk through Vinales’ rich countryside. Experience the day-to-day life of local Cuban farmers and learn the secret techniques involved in making cigars. You’ll have the chance to roll – and, if you like, smoke – a Cuban cigar yourself.

Enjoy the afternoon at leisure. Take a siesta or walk the charming township before heading to Finca Agroecologica El Paraiso for exceptional farm-to-plate dining surrounded by orchids and stunning mountain views.

Accommodation: Casa China or similar

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Optional Activities:

  • Indian Cave with Boat Ride (from EUR5)
  • Palenque Cave (from EUR5)

Day 7: Vinales – Cienfuegos

After a hearty breakfast, set out for coastal Cienfuegos, a French colonial town named Cuba’s ‘Pearl of the South’. Elegant French architecture, Spanish influences and staggering ocean views cement this UNESCO World Heritage-listed town as one of the island’s absolute must-sees.

On arrival, visit a local artist’s gallery for a unique insight into Cienfuegos’ vibrant creative scene before wandering through the town’s arts and crafts markets and the historic mansions of the French settlers. Finish with a stop at the Palacio de Valle, a visually stunning Moorish-inspired villa seemingly stuck in time.

Enjoy the afternoon at leisure – head to the Castillo de Jagua, a fortress built over a century before Cienfuegos was founded to repel pirates, or simply walk the streets and enjoy the ambience of the coastal town.

Accommodation: Casa Lilly or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Optional Activities:

  • Playa Giron Museum (from EUR5)
  • Fish Cave, including snorkelling and swim (from EUR5)

Day 8: Cienfuegos – Trinidad

Experience one of the most wonderfully well-preserved colonial towns in Cuba today as you reach say ‘hola!’ to Trinidad.

Stop along the way at Topes Collantes Nature Reserve, a dazzling reserve that stretches across the southeastern Escambray Mountains. Brimming with canyons, waterfalls and rivers, this jungle-filled park is the perfect place to escape the heat and experience the tremendous natural beauty of the region. Wander through the swaying palms of Parque El Nicho before visiting the park’s waterfall for a refreshing dip in the heart of the rainforest.

Not to be confused with the Caribbean island of the same name, Trinidad is a living city-museum of narrow cobblestone streets, majestic churches, soulful courtyards and an electrifying history filled with pirate raids and folklore.

After check-in, take a leisure stroll through town before heading to a rum tasting and sunset dinner at a rooftop restaurant in town. Cuban rum is defined by strong caramel and vanilla flavours, often backed by spiced notes of cinnamon and nutmeg and featuring a long finish. It’s the perfect companion to a lazy afternoon in this timeless town.

Accommodation: Casa Jesus or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Day 9: Trinidad

Enjoy time at leisure this morning to explore the best of Trinidad. Stroll past brightly coloured colonial buildings, visit local markets and art galleries or admire soaring views of Trinidad from atop Cerro de la Vigia Hill.

Later on, enjoy a delicious Cuban cocktail class and learn how to make a perfect mojito. This traditional Cuban punch iconsists only of white rum, lime juice, soda water, sugarcane juice and mint, but there is an art to the perfect mojito, and no better place to perfect your skills than in Trinidad.

After cocktails, head to the golden sands and turquoise wasters of Ancon Beach for lazy afternoon spent watching the sun set over the endless blue horizon.

Accommodation: Casa Jesus or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Optional Activities:

  • Cave Disco (from EUR5)
  • History Museum (from EUR5)
  • Romantic Museum (from EUR5)
  • Archaeological Museum (from EUR5)

Day 10: Trinidad – Havana

After breakfast, make the four-hour trip back to Havana via the Manaca Iznaga, an 18th-century traditional sugar plantation. Admire sweeping views of the picturesque Cuban countryside and distant mountain ranges from the plantation’s 45-metre-tall tower.

Continue to Santa Clara’s Revolution Square, home of Che Guevara’s mausoleum and a moving tribute to one of Cuba’s most beloved national heroes.

Return in time to appreciate one last sunset over the magnificent Malecon and one last night dancing and drinking in Havana. If you’re feeling sentimental, seek out Cuba’s other national drink, the Cuba Libre – rum, coke and a twist of lime, born at the end of Cuba’s War of Independence against the Spanish and invented by the famous Bacardi family, at the time notoriously anti-colonial.

Accommodation: Casa Cuarteles or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Day 11: Depart Havana

After breakfast, say adios to Havana, enjoying the rest of the morning before being transferred to Havana Jose Marti International Airport (HAV) for your onward journey.
