Flights: Return international full service flights with Vietnam Airlines from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane are included with your package. A surcharge of AU$300 per person will apply for departures from any other city and needs to be paid before tickets can be arranged. Travellers should have a good level of physical fitness and mobility and must be able to negotiate uneven surfaces, climb stairs and board boats.

Travellers are advised to check with their local health professional at least 45 days prior to departure, as some vaccinations require 30 days or more to be effective. Proof of vaccination is not usually required unless you are coming from an infected area.

Today you’ll fly to Hanoi in Vietnam, where you will be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, the afternoon is at your leisure. This evening, meet your leader and the rest of your group for a welcome dinner at a local favourite restaurant.

Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is rich with culture thanks to an eclectic mix of influences including French, which is evident through the fine old colonial buildings and tree lined boulevards. Meet your local guide in the morning to discover the city, taking in sights including Ho Chi Minh Complex, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, The Presidential Palace, Ho Chi Minh’s house-on-stilts and the nearby One Pillar Pagoda. Enjoy traditional local fare for lunch before visiting the Temple of Literature (Vietnam’s first university, built in 11th century), the Tran Quoc Pagoda (the oldest pagoda in Vietnam), Sword Lake and Ngoc Son Temple. Finish the day with a ride on a three-wheeled cyclo and discover the vibrant Old Quarter of Hanoi.

Pack an overnight bag ready for your trip to Halong City (approximately a four-hour drive away with a break en route). Upon arrival, meet the crew of the traditional junk boat, your home for the night in the breathtaking Halong Bay. After boarding, enjoy a scenic cruise through the iconic limestone islands of Halong Bay and progress to Bai Tu Long Bay, which is every bit as beautiful as Halong. Explore local caves and go swimming in the beautiful waters of the bay before enjoying dinner back on board.

Wake up to spectacular views of the bay and indulge in a traditional Tai Chi session on the sundeck with complimentary tea and coffee. Cruise through the bay, soaking up beautiful sights including Trong, Trinh Nu and Me Cung Caves and Coc Ngoi Islet. Take a seat on deck and admire the passing views. Stop to explore Sung Sot Cave, then return to the boat to enjoy brunch while cruising back to Halong Dock, where you’ll disembark and return to Hanoi. Back in Hanoi, the rest of the evening is at your leisure. Your local guide will be on hand to make recommendations on what to do and where to eat.

This morning, you’ll be transferred to the airport in preparation for the flight to Hue. On arrival, your local guide will meet you before you board a boat for a relaxing cruise along the Perfume River to Thien Mu Pagoda, Tu Duc Tomb and the French-influenced tomb of the 12th Emperor Khai Dinh. After lunch at a local restaurant, check in to the hotel and the afternoon is at your leisure. You may wish to join your guide on a visit to the busy and colorful markets at Dong Ba Market – the perfect opportunity to pick up some souvenirs.

After breakfast, visit The Imperial City, a walled palace and well-preserved remnant of the vast citadel and royal quarters that once existed on the site. In the early 19th century, Emperor Gia Long consulted geomancers to source the best location to build a new palace and citadel and this site was chosen. Tens of thousands of laborers were recruited to dig the ten-kilometre moat and earthen walls that form the outer perimeter of the citadel. Afterwards, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before transferring to Hoi An via Hai Van pass and Lang Co Beach, visiting the Marble Mountains en route. After checking in to Hoi An’s newest five-star hotel, the evening in Hoi An is at your leisure.

After breakfast, visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed My Son Sanctuary, one of the most significant examples of Hindu influence in South East Asia. This elaborate temple complex is the burial place of Cham royals and heroes dating back to the Kingdom of Champa. Afterwards, enjoy a walking tour through Hoi An. The Ancient Town is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port and dates from the 15th to the 19th century. Its architecture and streets show the influences – both local and international – that have combined to create this unique heritage site. Visit an old merchant house, the Hoi An Museum, a Chinese Assembly Hall and the Japanese Covered Bridge, and take the chance to explore its many craft and silk shops and the colorful fish and produce market. This evening, enjoy a cooking class with a local expert and learn some of the secrets behind Vietnamese cooking before enjoying your creations for dinner.

After breakfast at hotel, transfer to the airport for the flight to Ho Chi Minh City. On arrival, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel for check in before going for lunch, where you’ll dine with the locals at a restaurant renowned for one of Vietnam’s most famous dishes – pho. Visit the Reunification Palace, the former palace of President Thieu and his predecessors. Today a museum and venue for official receptions, it features the private rooms of the president, the “War Room” from where the South Vietnamese forces were controlled, and the room where the North Vietnamese army finally took control in 1975. Nearby more iconic city landmarks, the Post Office and the Notre Dame Cathedral, which were built between 1877 and 1883. Built in Neo-Romanesque style, Notre Dame is the major seat of the Catholic religion in modern Vietnam. Continue to the War Remains Museum, where you can learn about the Vietnam War. Final site for the day is Ben Thanh market, where a wide selection of goods are on offer.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before heading to the Cu Chi Tunnels, which are located in an area known during the American War in Vietnam as the ‘Iron Triangle’ because of its strength of the Communist insurgency. Cu Chi was also the end of many caravan paths that fed down from the Chinese border, across mountain borders with Laos and into the Mekong Delta – later known as the ‘Ho Chi Minh Trail’. The network of tunnels, which is several stories deep in some areas, features trapdoors, living areas, storage facilities, weapon factories, field hospitals, command centres and kitchens. Transfer back to Saigon where the afternoon is at leisure.

Pack an overnight bag in preparation for your trip to Can Tho or Cai Be (depending on day) where you will board your overnight traditional wooden river cruise vessel. After a refreshing welcome drink you are shown to your comfortable cabin to refresh before lunch. As lunch is served, the boat sets sail along the Mekong. Sit back and watch the beautiful scenery and observe the daily life of the Mekong people. In the afternoon, disembark for a guided stroll through a village and the surrounding fruit orchards or rice fields. Meet with the locals and sample the local produce and fruits. Back on board, enjoy a drink at the bar or relax on deck as the sun sets over the magnificent water landscape of the Mekong river. The cruise boat will anchor for the night and the day ends with a delicious on-board dinner.

Awake to the beauty of the river, ready for another exciting day of sightseeing in the Mekong Delta. While you enjoy an early breakfast, you’ll see the locals going about their daily work, drying exotic fruits and building ships on the wooden yards. Board a sampan boat to Cai Rang floating market, the region’s busiest and most lively markets. Explore the small channels of the Mekong delta around Cai Be with a small sampan or by foot. Marvel at the sheer abundance of exotic fruits, vegetables and skillfully-handcrafted regional products. Pull up to the boats to talk and bargain with the merchants. Afterwards, visit some of the local factories making candy and cakes, or cruise through the green waters to see local houses, lush orchards and ship-building yards. Disembark in the afternoon and return to Saigon, where you’ll enjoy a farewell dinner with your group.
