Two-Hour Small Group Guided Bat Spotting Walking Tour
Journey to a survey area and seek out New Zealand’s rare long-tailed bats, known to fly over dusk, on a two-hour small group walking tour. With the help of bat detectors, binoculars, headlamps and night vision goggles, hear the distinctive calls of bats as they pass by – if you’re lucky you may even glimpse these night denizens in graceful flight!

Important:
- Departure times vary depending on sunset times
- As Earthlore is a garden on a hill with gravel and grass paths, wheelchair access is limited. Earthlore’s vehicles do not have the facility to accommodate wheelchairs
- The Catlins is a rainforest – please come prepared with suitable wet-weather gear
- A reasonable level of fitness is required as there are some hilly sections but you won’t be walking large distances
- Bat guarantee: If no bats are heard during your tour, you will receive a 20% refund or you may elect to book another night free of charge
- Food and drinks are not included. Any excess amount must be paid directly to the Earthlore

- Minimum of two people required for tour to go ahead
- All guests must be aged 8+ to participate in this experience
- Itinerary is subject to change depending on availability, weather and road conditions
- Bats will only be out if moths are flying so if it is extremely windy, cold or raining hard, tours may be cancelled at Earthlore’s discretion. In this instance, a full refund, less a 10% booking fee, will be given
- Earthlore cannot be held accountable for any tour cancellations or changes caused by weather conditions, road hazards, vehicle malfunctions, or other unexpected circumstances that may impede the scheduled tour. Earthlore retains the right to cancel or alter any trip due to uncontrollable factors, including but not limited to weather conditions, mechanical issues, as well as limited or unavailable parking on-site
Cancellations:
- Cancellations received more than 30 days prior to departure date: a full refund applies
- Cancellations received between 7 and 30 days prior to departure date: a 50% refund applies
- Cancellations received between 2 and 7 days prior to departure date: a 10% refund applies
- Cancellations made within 24 hours of departure date: no refund applies
Changes to Bookings:
- 30 days’ notice is required to change a booking you have made
