Please book your flights to arrive at New Chitose Airport (CTS) at any time. Airport transfers are not included for your tour. Your hotel is located approximately a one-hour drive from New Chitose Airport (CTS). Check-in on Day 1 is at 3pm.
Today your journey through Japan’s winter wonderland begins. Meet your guide in the lobby area of your hotel after breakfast to set off promptly at 9am for a bus tour of Sapporo. Begin with the historic village of Hokkaido, an open-air museum of relocated and restored heritage buildings from the mid-19th century to the 1920s. Then, pass the frosty lawns of central Odori Park.
After lunchtime, your group will visit the oldest clock tower and clock museum in Japan as well as the Sapporo Beer Museum, a heritage brewery that’s been producing fine Japanese lager since 1876.
Before returning to the hotel, enjoy a welcome dinner with your group at a local restaurant.
Depart this morning by coach on a day trip to Otaru, the small harbour town with a well-preserved canal one hour west of Sapporo. Here, you’ll enter the renowned blown glass shop of Kitaichi Garasukan. Built into a heritage shipping warehouse, comapany’s museum contains halls full of delicate ornaments and functional glass pieces that have been exported all over the world. Climb to the second floor to discover a remarkable tea room lit only by glass lamps that emanate a magical glow.
Continue to the Music Box Museum, a whimsical sanctuary, humming with the melodies of more than 80,000 exquisitely crafted coffers. Complete your Otaru visit with a ride up to Mount Tengu along the Tenguyama ropeway gondala, taking in soaring ocean views.
Return to Sapporo by coach for a restful slumber.
Travel time: Driving – two hours
From Sapparo, drive to enchanting Hakodate, stopping at Shikotsu-Toya National Park along the way. Nestled within a volcanic caldera, Lake Toya creates a haven of fields and forests across the surrounding lands. From an elevated position, take in views of snow-capped mountains in the distance and admire the lake’s rippling surface – thanks to extreme depths of up to 180 metres, the water here never freezes.
After stopping for lunch near the lake, finish the journey to Hakodate. When arrived, savour waterfront views from two breathtaking vantage points – the star-shaped Goryoukaku Tower and boulevard-style Hachimanzaka slope – before settling in at your hotel.

At 8.30am, take a brisk stroll to the Hakodate Morning Market. Admire stalls vending fresh crabs (kani), salmon eggs (ikura) and sea urchin (uni), as well as fresh produce grocers and restaurants serving seafood breakfast donburi.
Next, brace yourself for your first of two exhilarating Shinkansen bullet train journeys today, covering the distance to Aomori in just one hour.
Upon arrival, delve into local culture during a visit to the Nebuta Museum WA-RASSE, which features parade floats from the city’s annual festival, held in August in anticipation of the autumn harvest season. The skill and art that goes into these massive papier-mache creations truly must be seen to be believed.
After marveling at the masterpieces on display, board your second bullet train bound for Tokyo. Transfer to your hotel and tonight, enjoy dinner at leisure.

On your first morning in Tokyo, meet your guide at 9am for a city tour. Begin in the historic Asakusa district, where the city’s oldest Buddhist temple, Senso-ji, has stood since 645AD, guarded by its photogenic Thunder Gate. From here, step onto the 250-metre long Nakamise shopping arcade. The historic strip has functioned as a commercial hub for 300 years and offers a variety of storefronts where you can shop for gifts, collectibles and local snacks.
Travel next to vibrant Harajuku, an area known for quirky fashion and upmarket boutiques, to see the Meiji Shrine – dedicated to Japan’s late emporer – and cartoonish Takeshita Street, where Tokyo’s schoolchildren are known to gather. Last, stop by the Eiffel-inspired, orange and white Tokyo Tower.
Today is yours to explore the city at your leisure, or rest as you please.
If the city’s not your style and you wish to venture further afield, highly recommended is a day trip north to Nikko National Park and the gold-encrusted Toshogu shrine (surcharges apply).
Wake early this morning and transfer to the train station for a 9.20am journey on the Shinkansen to Nagano.
Drive to the nearby 7th-century Zenko-ji shrine which houses what is widely believed to be the earliest Buddha statue known of in Japan. Dig into an included soba noodle lunch at one of the cafes surrounding the temple before transfering to your Nagano accommodation.

Your tour takes place in Japan’s icy winter months, which happens to be the best time of year to visit Nagano’s famous snow monkey park and hot springs.
Watch the adorable, rosy faces of Japanese Macaques, as they warm themselves in their unique habitat featuring steamy thermal waters within Jigokudani Yaen-koen. On your return, stop in the chestnut-filled valleys of Obuse – a charming, historic town where the famous artist Hokusai (painter of The Great Wave of Kanagawa) was born.

Rise early for your 9am Shinkansen transfer to Kyoto, arriving around lunchtime. Your coach will pick you up around 2pm at Kyoto Station for some sightseeing.
No trip to Kyoto is complete without a visit to the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Climb the winding steps through thousands of bright red torii gates, carving a skeletal tunnel through the still winter forest. Pause at the top and feel the serenity of this utterly unique Shinto shrine, before descending to the famous geisha district of Gion. Here, take part in a traditional tea ceremony before heading to your final accommodation for check-in.

Today starts with a trip to the one-and-only Kinkaku-ji, known as the ‘Golden Pavilion’ thanks to the genuine gold leaf that coats its top two storeys. Watch its dazzling reflection dance across Kyoko-chi Pond as you learn about the tumultuous history and spiritual importance of this 14th-century structure, presided over by a Chinese phoenix.
Next, visit Arashiyama and walk through the swaying stalks of the frosted Bamboo Grove, listening to the reeds’ gentle clacking as you crane your neck toward the canopy. Next, cross the Katsura River by way of the thoughtfully designed cypress-wood Togetsukyo Bridge.
Take lunch at your leisure before driving to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kiyomizu-dera Buddhist temple. This incredible wooden structure was built without the use of nails, and its formidable westward-facing stage is an ideal spot to take in views of Kyoto’s snow-blanketed woodlands and rooftops below.
Today is yours to explore Kyoto at leisure. Consider an excursion on your own to nearby Nara, to see the Todai-ji temple complex and wild sika deer who inhabit the parkland (surcharges apply).
Tonight, your group will be treated to a traditional maiko performance by a geisha-in-training and farewell dinner. Enjoy this last opportunity to reflect on your wintry journey with your travel companions before tomorrow’s departure.
After one final breakfast, it’s time to say ‘sayonara’ to Japan.
