Travel along the Basque coast to Getaria, a fishing village set beside the Bay of Biscay and the birthplace of explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano. The journey introduces you to the rugged coastline and maritime character of the region.

Take part in a private Txakoli wine tasting with fresh seafood, then return to San Sebastián for time at leisure. Later, dine at Zelai Txiki, where regional produce and Basque cooking traditions provide another food-focused experience.

Leave the coast behind and travel to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the traditional starting point of the Camino Francés. From here, begin your journey through the Pyrenees, following mountain paths through open countryside and forest as you cross into Spain.

A picnic lunch is included along the way, while your luggage is transferred ahead so you can enjoy the walk without carrying your bags. The landscape changes as you leave the French Basque Country behind, with mountain views and quieter trails setting the scene for the days ahead.

Arrive in Roncesvalles, a remote mountain settlement and one of the Camino’s most important pilgrimage stops. For centuries, it has offered shelter and spiritual support to pilgrims arriving from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, with the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria at the heart of the community.

This evening, attend the Pilgrim’s Mass and blessing, a meaningful tradition that welcomes you to the Camino and marks the beginning of your journey through Spain.

Your dedicated support vehicle remains with the group throughout the stage, transporting your luggage, carrying refreshments and providing assistance at designated points along the route.

After lunch, return to Pamplona for a second night at the five-star Gran Hotel La Perla, where Ernest Hemingway stayed during his visits to Pamplona.

Walking preparation

  • This is an active walking tour with stages ranging from approximately 20km–29km. The first Camino stage crosses the Pyrenees, while several later stages are also long. A good level of health and fitness is required.
  • We recommend following a walking preparation plan for eight to 12 weeks before departure, gradually building towards consecutive days of 20km–29km. Preparation should include walking with a day pack, managing hills and descents and taking regular breaks.
  • If you have existing foot, knee, hip, back or cardiovascular concerns, please consult your GP, podiatrist or physiotherapist before travelling.

Camino Credential and Compostela

  • Your dedicated Camino Guide will provide a Pilgrim’s Credential for official stamping along the route.
  • Guests wishing to receive the Compostela should collect at least two stamps per day during the final 100 kilometres. This tour covers the final section from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela.
  • Your Compostela can be collected from the Pilgrim’s Welcome Office in Santiago after completing the route.

Packing and equipment

While your main luggage will be transported between hotels, you’ll need to carry everything required during each walking day in a small day pack.

Recommended items include:

  • Well-broken-in walking shoes or boots
  • Lightweight walking socks and spare pairs
  • Comfortable walking clothes and layers
  • Waterproof jacket and pack cover
  • Sun protection, hat and sunglasses
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Walking poles, particularly for the Pyrenean stage and longer descents
  • Blister treatment, personal medication and basic first aid
  • Small amount of cash
  • Phone charger and portable power bank
  • Comfortable shoes for evenings
  • Swimwear, where appropriate

Weather and conditions

  • You should be prepared to walk in varied conditions, including sun, rain, wind, cooler mornings and muddy sections. Weather in Galicia can change quickly, so waterproof clothing is essential.
  • Please check Spain’s official AEMET weather service before and during your tour for regional weather updates, mountain forecasts and alerts.

Health, safety and travel information

  • Comprehensive travel insurance covering walking activities, medical treatment, evacuation and cancellation is strongly recommended.
  • Carry identification, keep valuables secure and ensure your phone is charged each morning. Please notify your Camino Guide promptly about blisters, injuries, dehydration or fatigue.

Useful technology

  • We recommend downloading the official Way of Saint James in Galicia app for route information and practical guidance.
  • Downloading Spanish for offline use in Google Translate may also be useful during the tour.

Camino etiquette

  • Please respect fellow pilgrims and local communities by keeping noise low around churches and villages, allowing faster walkers to pass and following marked paths.

Recommended information

  • Before departure, review the official Camino de Santiago website for route information, preparation advice and regional highlights. The Camino route and stage planner may also be useful for reviewing walking distances, terrain and elevation.
