10-Day Tour Through Tropical Borneo

The lush jungles of Borneo hold truly unique treasures within its rainforests and national parks – the elusive orangutan, the world’s largest cave passage open to the public, or the thousands of species of tropical plants and wildlife. Get a feel for one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet on an adventure curated for true nature-lovers as you spend nights in a jungle lodge, visit sun bear and orangutan sanctuaries, delve through three wildly different national parks along with other exclusive experiences. Enjoy all this plus nine nights of hand-picked accommodation, daily breakfasts and select other meals, the services of an informative local guide, private transfers, internal flights and more.

Highlights

Mount Kinabalu and its surrounds are known across the globe for its incredible range of flora and fauna, serving as home to around 6,000 different species in total. Wander in awe of the diverse landscape on a guided walk through the area – a place known as the highest mountain in both the Malay Archipelago and Malaysia.

Take a journey to the world-famous Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, a temporary home to injured or orphaned orangutans. Spend some time watching these gentle creatures in this rehabilitation centre as they play and feed throughout this rainforest nursery, learning about animal conservation along the way. You’ll also get to watch gorgeous sun bears roam outside at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre as you come to understand more about the plight of these rare, honey-loving beasts.

Spend two memorable nights at the simple yet beautiful Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort. Located on the banks of the Kinabatangan River, this resort offers an up-close and personal nature experience as you take in the beautiful sounds and scenery hidden amongst the mangroves. Take expeditions to look out for the Proboscis monkey, birds, reptiles and other exciting creatures hiding in this lush rainforest, including a nocturnal walking tour to maximise your chances of seeing more of Borneo’s unique wildlife.

Discover a UNESCO World Heritage-listed jungle paradise at the Mulu National Park – a spectacular untouched rainforest known for housing dramatic peaks and the longest cave in Asia: Deer Cave. Delve through a three-kilometre stretch of forest to reach this surreal landscape and, once inside, keep an eye out for the over two million bats that live here – 12 different species in total.

Enjoy several internal flights across the mainland to ensure you get to spend less time waiting and more time exploring. During those moments of downtime, you’ll also stay at hand-picked accommodation specifically chosen for comfort and convenience, allowing you to rejuvenate after exciting days of exploring the jungle.

Gaya Island Extension

An optional extended tour takes you from the shoreline of Kota Kinabalu to the balmy beaches of Gaya Island, where magic sunsets and dramatic island views await. You’ll spend time at the luxurious Gaya Island Resort & Spa where you may choose to take some rest and relaxation in your Canopy Villa. Set amongst tropical mangroves on a gently sloping hillside, these villas offer a beautiful outlook and are walking distance from the resort's pristine sandy beach. The wooden walkways of the Spa Village lead to many excellent therapeutic treatment centres, while the private beach offers a true VIP experience in this secluded island paradise.

What We Like

There's something on this trip that you can't experience at a zoo, and that comes from the authenticity of the flora and fauna along the way. The Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary and Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre both do a fantastic job of creating realistic environments to promote their rehabilitation and as a result the animals are happier and more adventurous. Beyond that, the nature you'll spot as you sail along the Kinabatangan River gets you a close but safe distance from all manner of creatures. You'll truly walk away from this adventure with a different view of nature.

DAY 1 – Kota Kinabalu
Welcome to Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Malaysia’s Sabah state. Depending on your arrival time, you’ll be able to explore this colourful city at your own pace. Make sure you talk to the hotel reception after checking in – they’ll give you details on an important orientation meeting scheduled to take place at 6 pm today. In the meantime, get to know this intriguing city set between the Borneo jungle and the South China Sea. Modern-day 'KK' is a lively modern metropolis, having recovered from World War II bombings. The Sabah State Museum is a great place to immerse yourself in its backstory.
Accommodation: Mercure Kota Kinabalu
Meals: Dinner

DAY 2 – Kota Kinabalu
Start your day with an early morning departure as you drive to the foothills of Mount Kinabalu. A brief stop at the roadside stalls of the Nabalu Market gives plenty of opportunities to browse and buy fresh seasonal fruits for a tasty snack along with quaint local handicrafts. Take in the views of Mount Kinabalu while you’re here – you may want to snap a few panoramic photos in the process. Visit the Education Centre and Botanical Garden to learn about the wonderful flora of Kinabalu Park as your guide shares many of the secret delights that only a local could know. After lunch, continue to Poring Hot Springs where your choice of either a guided nature walk (550 metres) up to the canopy walkway or a dip in the hot sulphur spring baths awaits. Continue to Kinabalu Park for lunch
Accommodation: Mercure Kota Kinabalu
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 3 – Kinabatangan
After a flight from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan, visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre where rescued Orangutans are re-introduced into the wild. Observe these gentle creatures at their feeding stations in the rainforest and at the nursery, then proceed to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. The centre rescues captured sun bears and is actively involved in their conservation, welfare and rehabilitation while educating the public on their plight. Over 30 sun bears live at the centre in the bear house and outdoor enclosures. Afterwards, depart Sepilok and proceed to the jetty in Sandakan where you’ll begin your boat cruise up the Lower Kinabatangan River, passing pristine mangrove forests and searching for wildlife en route to the Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort.

After lunch, free to relax or explore the surrounding area on the nature boardwalk. In the early afternoon, continue cruising in search of proboscis monkeys, birds, reptiles and other wildlife. Witness the glittering of fireflies on the mangrove trees after the sun sets, then head back to the lodge for dinner. You’ll then continue on a guided walk around the Lodge’s nature boardwalk and search for insects, birds and other wildlife before wrapping up with a night in the nature-bound lodge.
Accommodation: Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort

DAY 4 – Kinabatangan River
Start the day off with an early morning cruise, keeping a keen ear out for the orchestra of chattering birds and various wildlife as you sail along. Arrive at the ox-bow lake of Danau Pitas for some jungle exploration, tucking into a packed breakfast as you soak in the nature of the place. Push on to a local fishing village, Kampung Abai, before interacting with the indigenous Orang Sungai river people while learning of their traditions. After lunch, your afternoon will be free at leisure before you embark on another river cruise along the Kinabatangan River. As the evening rolls in, head back to the lodge for dinner before heading to bed.
Accommodation: Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5 – Sandakan
After breakfast, depart the lodge and head to Sandakan by boat while keeping an eye out for wildlife on the shores as you sail along the river. Sandakan formerly stood as the capital of British North Borneo and historically held strong trading ties with Hong Kong. As a result, the Cantonese influence is fairly obvious in spots across the city, namely the lively harbour-side market, the Chinese temples and the delicious local cuisine.
Accommodation: Four Points Sheraton Sandakan
Meals: Breakfast

DAY 6 – Sandakan
Spend a free morning exploring Sandakan Town at your own pace. Once the afternoon arrives, visit the Sandakan War Memorial to learn more about the city’s past while standing on the former grounds of a Japanese POW camp – a place marking the starting point of the tragic Sandakan Death Marches. Continue to the Rainforest Discovery Centre to observe the fascinating red flying squirrels – while they technically don’t fly, they glide from tree to tree with the help of their unique anatomy. Their ability to cover impressive distances has lead to their population spreading far and wide across Asia, even as far as Pakistan.
Accommodation: Four Points Sheraton Sandakan
Meals: Breakfast

DAY 7 – Mulu
Travel by plane to Mulu, taking a brief stopover in Kota Kinabalu along the way. Once you arrive at Mulu Airport, transfer to your accommodation for check-in before heading to Mulu National Park. Begin your travels through this reserve with a 3-kilometre scenic walk through primary rainforest to the entrance of Deer Cave – the world’s largest cave passage. This gigantic tunnel spans a gigantic 150 metres wide and 120 metres high, with no part of the cave’s roof ever dipping less than 90 metres high. The rocky environment within the cave is almost moon-like and from one vantage point, a profile similar to that of Abraham Lincoln can be observed. Next to Deer Cave is Langs Cave, a tunnel dotted with fantastic limestone stalagmites and stalactites. After viewing the two caves, proceed to the Bat Observatory outside Deer Cave. Most evenings at sundown, a spectacular exodus of about 2 million of bats can be observed as they leave the cave in search of food.
Accommodation: Mulu Marriot Resort & Spa
Meals: Breakfast

DAY 8 – Mulu
Head towards the headquarters of Mulu National Park before embarking on a longboat journey to Wind Cave. Inspect its impressive King’s Chamber, full of stalactites and stalagmites with delicate lace-like patterns, then head up 250 concrete cliffs next to a limestone cliff face en route to Clearwater Cave. Like most caves in Mulu, Clearwater Cave provides a habitat for unique species of plants such as the one-leafed plant, which only be found at Mulu. Photo-sensitive algae also grow here on certain rocks, producing needle-like formations that point towards the source of light. Near Clearwater Cave there’s also a wonderful swimming area shaded by giant rainforest trees. Enjoy a picnic lunch, then swim or relax before returning to your accommodation. The rest of the afternoon is free at your leisure.
Accommodation: Mulu Marriot Resort & Spa
