History is on the agenda today as you journey in the footsteps of the city’s great emperors with your expert local guide. Sultanahmet (the Old City, formerly Constantinople) has such a wealth of historic sights, shopping precincts and great eateries that you might never want to leave. Among its most magnificent is the Hagia Sophia Mosque, whose lofty dome, adorned by Byzantine mosaics, and structural splendour are said to have changed the very history of architecture forever.
Enter the Hippodrome, a rectangular arena alongside the Sultanahmet Park and the scene of many a chariot race enjoyed by the Byzantine Emperors. After lunch, marvel at the dazzling turquoise tiles within the 17th-century Blue Mosque and take a wander inside Topkapi Palace — the primary residence of the Ottoman sultans for more than four centuries — on your way to the colourful Grand Bazaar. Explore one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world — boasting more than 3,000 stalls of handcrafted jewellery, textiles and books — before an evening at leisure.
Optional Activities:
This morning, you will be transferred to Istanbul Airport (IST) for your included flight to Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) in Cappadocia.
They say that setting foot on Cappadocia’s dramatic, dream-like landscape feels like stepping into the pages of a fairytale, and nothing encapsulates this more than your accommodation: Acer Cave Hotel. A stone, castle-style fantasy on the outskirts of the city, this captivating hotel will take your breath away with vistas of the magical ‘fairy chimneys’. On your way to your majestic hotel, descend into the underground city of Ozkonak before a pottery workshop, where you will learn to make your own pottery using local techniques.
After breakfast at the hotel, venture to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Goreme Open Air Museum to view incredible houses, churches and monasteries carved out of the soft cliff face. These unique Christian sanctuaries contain many examples of Byzantine art, cave chapels and colourful biblical frescoes from the 10th to 12th centuries. Then, join a local family for a village lunch.
This afternoon, join the local family for a village tour and stop at ‘Love Valley,’ famous for its phallic rock formations. After your village visit, drive to Pigeon Valley, where certain cave dwellings have been painted white to attract the birds for their valuable droppings, which are used as fertiliser for the region’s grape yards and farms to obtain extremely productive crops. Lastly, pay a visit to Uchisar Castle, a natural rock-cut tower, before returning to your hotel for an evening at leisure.
Optional Activity:
Unearth the unique charms of Cappadocia at your leisure this morning before departing for Konya at midday. Join your guide on an orientation tour of the city, which is famed for its strong ties to Islam. Visit the original Tekke of Mevlana before venturing to Aladdin Hill in Konya’s centre where the sheltered remains of the palace of the Seljuk Sultans of Rum lay. Spend this evening at leisure.
Following an early morning breakfast, you’ll drive approximately four hours to the ancient site of Aspendos, where you’ll visit Aspendos Theatre. One of the best-preserved Roman theatres in Turkiye and in the world, the theatre continues to host concerts and performances to this day.
Today, you will drive to the maze-like Kaleici district to discover the old town of Antalya at your own pace. Stroll the perfectly restored whitewashed and red-roofed Ottoman mansions that line the cobblestone streets, head into the Mediterranean from the Old Harbour or relax on Konyaalti Beach… the choice is yours.
Optional Activity:
There are some places you can’t help but fall in love with at first sight — Pamukkale is one such destination. Made eternally famous by its gleaming white terraces overflowing with warm, mineral-rich water, this so-called ‘Cotton Castle’ will bewitch you with its beauty and world-renowned healing powers.
Just above this unique site lies Hierapolis, once a Roman and Byzantine spa city, renowned for its magnificently preserved Necropolis. Spend the day here discovering the main street and gates, the illustrious thermal baths, the Devil’s Hole and the ancient theatre, where you can watch the sun fade into the horizon, before checking into the five-star Adempira Termal & Spa Hotel.
This morning, drive to the village of Sirince, an authentic Greek-Ottoman village, where you will enjoy time at leisure before continuing to Ephesus. Watch the Greco-Roman world come to life before your eyes today as you walk among the classical ruins of one of Turkiye’s best-preserved metropolises, Ephesus. More than a century of excavation has unearthed Ephesus’ rich classical history, including the imposing Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Tour around the amphitheatre and marvel at the gymnasium, baths and beautifully restored Library of Celsius — even walk the same storied marble streets that Mark Antony and Cleopatra once graced.
Wake for another day of history and adventure. This morning, tour the magnificent acropolis of Pergamon and its impressive temples and the library that made Pergamon a renowned cultural and political centre in its time. In the afternoon, attend a Turkish rug demonstration in the town of Bergama before returning to Izmir, where the rest of the day is yours at leisure.
This morning is yours to enjoy a leisurely breakfast before flying to Istanbul Airport (IST), where, on arrival, you will be transferred to your central accommodation.
This evening, your tour leader will take you to one of the best local taverns in town, set against the cool blue backdrop of the twinkling Bosphorus Strait, to enjoy your final dinner as a group.
Enjoy one last morning in Istanbul, before returning to Istanbul International Airport (IST) for your onward journey.
