Start your day with breakfast, then travel across Kenya’s highlands to Maasai Mara National Reserve. Home to the ‘Big Five’ – lion, rhino, Cape buffalo, African leopard and African elephant – Maasai Mara is one of the top wildlife destinations.
After checking in at your safari lodge, you’ll have time to relax and explore the area.
Travel time: Driving – approx. five hours
Maasai Mara stay
Wake up to two full days of exploring the park in search of the ‘Big Five’.
Maasai Mara is home to a rich variety of wildlife, with over 450 species recorded. You might spot lions resting in the sun, crocodiles in the waterways, roaming giraffes and warthogs, and various antelope throughout the reserve.
With around 570 bird species, including 50 types of birds of prey, there’s plenty to see from the treetops to the skies.
The Great Migration sees wildebeest, zebras, and other herds travel between the Serengeti and Maasai Mara. Between July and October, over 1.5 million animals take part in this journey, making it one of the largest wildlife events on Earth.
Maasai Mara stay
After breakfast, depart Maasai Mara for new adventures with a flight transfer to Amboseli National Park, connecting via Nairobi.
Dominated by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, Amboseli is one of Kenya’s oldest and most well-known parks. Despite its compact size, the park offers expansive views, with emerald-green swamps where large herds of elephants bathe.
In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive through the park.
Travel time: Driving – approx. 90 minutes / Flight – approx. 2.5 hours
Spend the day exploring Amboseli with morning and afternoon game drives.
From the dried lakebed of Lake Amboseli to the rolling savannahs and green swamps, search for jackals and spotted hyenas, baboons and monkeys aplenty, all with the help of your expert guide.
Today, cross the border into Tanzania at Namanga, travelling on to Karatu. Located near Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park, Karatu is a popular base for wildlife enthusiasts.
Check-in at your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening in preparation for your safari tomorrow.
Travel time: Driving – approx. 5.5 hours
This morning, drive down into the Ngorongoro Crater for a closer look at the wildlife. Spend a full morning game-viewing, watching for prides of lions, herds of Cape buffalo, impala and rhinoceros.
Ngorongoro Crater, the largest intact caldera in the world, is home to a wide variety of animals, including cheetahs, leopards and hyenas. As you observe the many birds, enjoy a picnic lunch by the hippo pool.
This afternoon, proceed to Ndutu at the edges of Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, where you’ll check in for the evening.
Please note: Accommodation for Day 8–10 will vary among three options, dependent on season, in order to ensure travellers have the best opportunity for experiencing the Great Migration.
Travel time: Driving – approx. four hours
Ngorongoro Crater game drive
Ndutu is a year-round wildlife hotspot and an ideal place to witness the Great Migration. As wildebeest and zebras follow their annual route through the Serengeti, predators, including lions, cheetahs and hyenas, are never far behind the herds.
Over the next two days, enjoy full-day game drives, spotting wildlife against the backdrop of the Serengeti’s distinctive kopjes – rocky outcrops that rise from the plains.
Lunch is served in the bush, so you won’t miss any of the action.
In the evening, gather around the campfire as the sun sets.
Please note: Accommodation for Day 8–10 will vary among three options, dependent on season, in order to ensure travellers have the best opportunity for experiencing the Great Migration.
Say goodbye to the Serengeti as you head to Tarangire National Park. Named after the Tarangire River, the park’s lifeblood, it’s home to a rich variety of wildlife and the iconic baobab trees scattered across the plains.
Check in at your safari lodge and relax in preparation for another big day tomorrow.
Travel time: Driving – approx. six hours
Spend your day getting to know Tarangire National Park with morning and evening game drives. Watch once more for the African elephant, gazelle and even the oryx, as well as a plethora of birds such as hornbills and hoopoes.
In stark contrast to the larger-than-life presence of many mammals, there is wonder to behold in the park’s population of smaller creatures too. Let your guide point out the colour-changing agama lizard or the scurrying hyrax.
This morning, check out of your Tarangire accommodation and take your included transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where your East African adventure concludes.
