Day 1: Buenos Aires, Argentina
Welcome to Buenos Aires, arguably one of the most fascinating cities in Latin America.
The day is at leisure and you are free to explore, maybe making a few purchases from the many shops or artisan markets, or relaxing in a cafe. Savour the local brew as you explore the beautiful streetscapes influenced by French and Italian splendour, peer into local barrios, and admire colourful murals painted by talented street artists.
Accommodation: To be advised.
Meals: Breakfast
Day 2: Depart Buenos Aires – Ushuaia
Today’s adventure begins with an early morning flight to Ushuaia (USH), before being transferred to your cruise — Hurtigruten’s MS Fridtjof Nansen — the newest of Hurtigruten’s fleet of custom-built ships.
Known as the city at the ‘End of the World’, Ushuaia’s strategic position at the southernmost tip of Argentina makes it the perfect gateway to the Antarctic, as well as the jaw-dropping Tierra del Fuego archipelago. After a briefing from your expedition team, you’ll have time to locate your cabin and explore the comforts and amenities on board.

Days 3–4: Drake Passage
Over the next two days, your expert expedition team will steer the ship across Drake Passage, considered by some to be the Mount Everest of the oceans. Separating Patagonia from the Antarctic Peninsula, these wild waters are known for their unforgiving westerly winds, referred to with playful reverence as the ‘Furious Fifties’. Aboard your custom-built Expeditions vessel, your qualified crew will skilfully lead their hardy charge south towards the ‘last continent’.
However strong the winds or rough the swells, your expertly designed ship is built to weather the toughest of conditions while keeping you luxuriously warm and dry.
Take time to unwind with a rejuvenating treatment at the onboard spa, warm up with a therapeutic trip to the sauna, then get to know your fellow voyagers over drinks at the Explorer Lounge & Bar. Thanks to the comprehensive amenities provided, you’re all set for a supremely comfortable journey.
Between visits to the Science Centre, join your expedition leader as they brief you on the best way to minimise environmental impact, ensure biosecurity of your clothing and catch glimpses of elusive wildlife once you reach the peninsula. Listen in for lectures on the history of Antarctic exploration and the continent’s fascinating geology, then watch as the waters abruptly chill upon your crossing of the Antarctic Convergence – the meeting point of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans with the Southern Ocean. Here, flora and fauna proliferate, providing a chance to spot penguins, seals, albatrosses and whales.

Day 5–9: Antarctica
With a flexible schedule over the next several days, take advantage of the unexpected and ever-changing landscape. Led by Hurtigruten’s expedition team, anticipate opportunities such as seeing towering icebergs at close range by small expedition boat, kayaking through glittering brash ice (surcharges apply), walking beaches covered with seals and penguins, and hiking summits for spectacular views.
From the ship’s deck, there are also great opportunities to witness the behaviours and interactions of different species and the geological and climatic forces that have shaped Antarctica.
Your experienced captain will work with the elements to create the best possible itinerary for the adventure, with ice cruising and landings offered at every opportunity – including several sites in the South Shetland Islands and on the Antarctic Peninsula.
Please note:
- As an expedition cruise, weather, tides, ice conditions and wildlife sightings can affect day-to-day activities and the itinerary – thus ensuring each expedition is unique.

Days 10–11: At Sea
After exploring this unforgettable continent, set course for warmer waters. En route to Argentina, your onboard expedition team will brief you about the history and biology of your surroundings, pointing out wildlife from the outer decks and scouting for the albatrosses that often guide the way. Using the state-of-the-art microscopes in the ship’s Amundsen Science Centre, help analyse samples taken during the expedition cruise to see another kind of ‘wildlife’ at the cellular level.
