The sprawling landscape of the Kimberley region is a study of natural contrast and harmony. Over 122,000 square kilometres, the terrain evolves from arid dry red earths to deep gorges and canyons to the luxuriant vegetation of UNESCO world heritage-listed parks. Sunsets in this great wilderness are divine, and the opportunity to get up close and personal with its natural geology and wildlife is unmissable.

What You’ll Love

The Scenery - be mesmerised by the striking diversity of landforms and eco-systems everywhere

Embark on a scenic flight from Kununurra to the World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park. Covering almost 240,00 hectares of wilderness, the park is a microcosm of abundant flora and fauna and boasts a sharply incised landscape of incredible rock formations.

A film director’s location dream, Bungle Bungle’s bizarrely shaped sandstone monoliths are blockbuster stars in their own right (cue Baz Luhrmann’s 'Australia'). Have your cameras ready as you visit the famed black and orange beehive striped domes, unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Rising 578 metres above sea level, the Bungle Bungle Range is one of the most extensive and impressive outcroppings of sandstone tower (or cone) karst terrain in the world.

Take a captivating hike to Echidna Chasm, a spectacular natural gorge characterised by striking colour variations, depending on the angle of the sun. Hike along The Escarpment trail that skirts the edge of the Bungle Bungle massif.

Walk along a Livistona palm-fringed trail to see the spectacular natural wonder of Mini Palms. The rocky dry creek beds provide an unforgettable contrast against the subterranean oasis where towering cliffs surround hundreds of ancient palm species.

Enjoy a guided walk to Cathedral Gorge, a spacious cavern whose dramatic landscape was used in the 1920s as a natural amphitheatre boasting astounding acoustics. The site is a popular picnic spot.

Fly over Lake Argyle, the largest man-made lake in the Southern Hemisphere and the famous Argyle Diamond Mine. Argyle is the largest diamond producer in the world by volume, and the only known significant source of pink and red diamonds, producing over 90 per cent of the world's supply. It also provides a large proportion of other naturally coloured diamonds, including champagne, cognac and rare blue diamonds.

Despite the rough road in, this place is awesome. The scenery is out of this world, the walks are great and well worth the effort. Take your time and enjoy the scenery - if you can let someone else do the driving (ruin their vehicle rather than yours :)), sit back, relax and enjoy what the Kimberley has to offer. Hike into Cathedral Gorge, check out the Picaninny Creek lookout, then head up to Echidna Creek for even more excitement with the walk over boulders. And don't forget the Dome walk too. All well worth it.. This is our second trip into the NP and we would come back for more...

We flew out on a sightseeing trip from Kunumurra. It took us over the Ord River Scheme as well as Argyle Diamond Mine. However, the Bungle Bungles provided the most magnificent sight. It was everything that we had seen in brochures and professional photos. we flew over and around them for some time until the pilot reluctantly had to return to base. Do not miss these stunning rock structures if you are in the Kimberley Region.
