What You'll Love

The Experiences – Venture on intimate safaris, meet Maasai tribespeople and take the most scenic hot air balloon ride over Africa's #1 reserve

This 11-day tour will have you ticking a long list of destinations and adventures off the bucket list.

Get your camera ready for morning and afternoon game drives through the heart of Tarangire National Park, Africa's best-kept secret. Famous for its large concentration of elephants as well as leopards, kudu (antelopes) and oryx – let the beauty of Tarangire unfold as you venture out into the baobab scattered landscape.

Head to the Manyara region to see Ngorongoro Crater: a deep, volcanic crater, the largest unbroken caldera in the world, a popular location to witness the annual migration of zebra and wildebeests. Explore the crater with morning and late afternoon game drives, plus enjoy a remarkable drive to Lake Manyara, “the loveliest lake in Africa” as novelist Ernest Hemingway said. Look out for the population of resident flamingos dotted across the diverse landscape.

Take the unmissable opportunity to get an insight into the vibrant and traditional life of the Maasai tribespeople. One of the most authentic ethnic tribes of Africa, Maasai people have clung to their traditional way of life in spite of modernisation, making them a symbol of enduring African culture.

Rise early for a once-in-a-lifetime hot air balloon safari over Maasai Mara. Your balloon is inflated against the first rays of sunrise and once aloft floats gently over the plains and the plethora of game. The balloon lands around one hour after taking off with breakfast and bubbly being prepared nearby.

Arrive in Kenya where you will stay and visit the region's most famous reserve, the Maasai Mara, the highlight of your Kenyan adventure. Imagine grassy plains and rolling hills brimming with wildlife, bejeweled with Maasai villages and specked with acacia trees, this is Maasai Mara - a magical place where nature and culture entwine. Here you will be able to see big cats, the big five, over 300 birds species, Maasai herdsmen graze their cattle side by side with predators, discuss your sightings with our naturalist who will be on hand to answer any of your questions, and witness nature’s biggest wildlife show, the annual Great Migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra - crossing Africa’s most famous rivers.

Indulge in memorable dining experiences throughout the tour, including a private picnic on Ngorongoro Crater floor watching wildlife go by, an elegant dinner in the middle of the wilderness in the Maasai Mara bush – plus nightly evening canapes and drinks around the campfire, as you discuss the day's adventures with your fellow travellers.

The Accommodation – Award-winning safari camps and lodges in the best Sanctuaries in Africa

Begin your luxury safari experience at Arusha Coffee Lodge, on one of Tanzania’s largest coffee plantations designed around the style of the original plantation houses, featuring an opulent and stylish décor with undertones of the bygone days of early exploration.

Located in a secluded area of Tarangire National Park, one of the most exciting and least visited parks in the country, Sanctuary Swala offers a very exclusive safari experience. The picturesque landscape is filled with ancient baobab trees, and roaming wildlife, and is built to the highest eco-friendly standards. The camp boasts an impressive infinity pool and twelve luxurious canvas pavilions - all shaded by acacia trees and overlooking the waterhole and plains in front of camp.

Venture to Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp, home to wildebeest, zebras, buffalos and the Big Five. This beautiful camp, located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, offers ten classic safari tents - each with its own en-suite bathroom and a personal tent attendant for all your needs. This is glamping on a whole other level of luxury!

Enjoy the stunning and newly rebuilt Sanctuary Olonana Camp, an award-winning safari camp set in lush woodland on the banks of the Mara River, in the heart of Kenya’s most famous game reserve: the Masai Mara. Featuring fourteen new glass-sided suites with river views, you will be able to watch the resident hippos wallowing in the water and take in splendid African sunsets. Famous for soul-warming service and exceptional customer experience, it is regarded as one of the top safari properties in Africa, having recently been named the best resort in Africa in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2017 Readers’ Choice Awards.

The 14 exceptional new suites, at least 130 sqm in size, are so comfortable that you’ll be forgiven for being tempted to stay in. DAY 9: GAME DRIVES

This morning after breakfast at the camp, it is time to explore the Masai Mara with your guide. The Mara is a fabulous place for seeing big cats and all of the big five, a variety of plains game and over 300 bird species. The plains offer a rich variety of food for the dominant predators including lion, leopard, hyena and cheetah. Spot elephants browsing amongst the large herds of wildebeest and topi, eland and buffalo, Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelle. In the Mara River, hippos submerge to snort and grumble while crocodiles sunbathe, mouths agape, on the riverbanks. From around July to October, the Masai Mara also hosts the greatest show on earth - the wildebeest migration. There are many different activities available at Sanctuary Olonana. You might choose to walk with our naturalist and learn about plants, trees, insects and even how to approach animals on foot, as your guide shows you how to spot animal signs which are everywhere but not easily noticed. After an exciting game activity you can relax by the pool or revitalise at the mini-spa which offers a range of treatments from facials to body massages. Sanctuary Olonana has earned a Gold Award from Ecotourism Kenya. You can visit the wetlands which cleanse wastewater before returning it to the natural environment or take part in our tree planting initiative which offers an opportunity to purchase and paint an indigenous tree, leaving a positive mark on a piece of Africa.

Try fishing for the legendary giant Nile perch found in these waters as you explore the myriad of tiny islands. Stop and visit a traditional fishing village before flying back to the Masai Mara. On your last evening, your guide will drive you out into the bush where a private and secluded clearing has been prepared for an elegant dinner in the middle of the wilderness. The table setting is as sophisticated and elegant as found in the finest restaurants. Candles flicker in the darkness, throwing golden lights on the table cloth as smiling waiters serve a delicious dinner. I found my experience so awesome. Everything about it was absolutely wonderful. The scenery stunning, the accommodation 10/10, but mostly the people here made my experience exceptional. So kind, lovely and funny. Just beautiful. Thank you so much!

Excellent quality tour – accommodation and staff were outstanding.
- T. Carroll - February 2018
I had an unforgettable stay at the luxurious Sanctuary Swala. From being picked up from the airstrip until the moment I left I had an incredible time and was taken such good care of. Every member of staff, from my safari guide (the amazing Siggy!) to my room attendant were so kind and attentive. The vibe created at the camp was one so relaxed and serene. The facilities are incredible - my room was outstanding, looking out into the bush, waking up to sounds I simply will not forget! Neither will I forget eating my breakfast in front of elephants and seeing incredible animals on my game drives.
- Tripadvisor - March 2018
Ngorongoro Crater Camp was the most rustic of the 3 Sanctuary camps we stayed at. The location and vistas were wonderful. The staff could not have been nicer or more helpful. Thomas made sure our showers were warm enough. The food delightful and beautifully served.
- Tripadvisor - March 2018
An experience of a life time. So many things ticked off my bucket list. The big five, hot air balloon safari, visiting the Maasai tribespeople - every day just got better and better. The lodges were stunning and the food was incredible and the guides made the whole thing come together for us. Couldn't recommend this highly enough thank you Luxury Escapes.
