Tour Extension – Chiang Mai

Extend your Thailand journey and hop on an** included domestic flight** from Bangkok to the charming northern city of Chiang Mai, where you’ll spend four nights surrounded by mountains and historic city walls. Visit the busy night markets and explore the beautiful quaint town populated by locals and a large expat community.

Visit the magical golden** Doi Suthep** and climb the temple’s 300 steps to witness panoramic views over the city. You’ll also experience an exciting 4x4 ride up the Doi Poi mountain where you’ll mingle with the local White Hmong tribe.

End your Thailand trip at the Thai Elephant Care Centre, where you’ll experience feeding the elderly elephants and watching them bathe.

DAY 1 - BANGKOK

Arrive at Bangkok International Airport, meet and greet and hop on your transfer to your hotel.

The rest of the day is at your leisure. Perhaps you could indulge yourself with a traditional Thai Massage, surprise your taste buds with the amazing local flavours of Thai cuisine or cap off the day by enjoying a sunset in any of the stylish rooftop bars which have blossomed in the city’s skyscrapers in recent years.

DAY 2 - BANGKOK

After breakfast, you’ll have the full day at your leisure to discover Bangkok on your own or to take one of the many optional excursions available. There are so many wonderous sites to explore such as The Royal Grand Palace - a great architectural masterpiece of several buildings from the outside and a magical inside was used as a royal residence from the 18th century to the mid-20th century.

Tonight, enjoy Thailand’s must-see spectacular show ‘Siam Niramit’, featuring over 100 performers on a gigantic stage with stunning props and designs, now listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. Get an insight into Thailand's historical and cultural heritage through the performances. Then enjoy a dinner with your fellow travellers.

DAY 3 - BANGKOK – KANCHANABURI

This morning journey upcountry towards the town of Kanchanaburi where we visit the bridge over the River Kwai made famous by the movie of the same name. Board a local train towards Burma and take in the stunning views of the River Kwai. Enjoy a light lunch before travelling to the infamous Hellfire pass where prisoners had to work under extreme conditions in the late second World War II. Continue to your hotel for the next two nights and enjoy an up-close experience of the river, staying in comfortable Raft rooms with private balconies; moored to the banks of the river with stunning scenery and natural surroundings.

DAY 4 - KANCHANABURI

After breakfast, travel by wooden raft from the resort and float on the Kwae Noi (River Kwai) to the Lawa Cave. Pass through a narrow entrance to a spacious cave that is ready to reveal its hidden secrets. See the formation of the natural stalagmites and stalactites, along with the Buddha statues. You’ll then get back on the river and continue your journey to an authentic Mon tribal village. The Mon are an ethnic group originally from Mongolia, living mostly in the middle of Myanmar, and along the southern border of Thailand. They are the earliest people to reside in Southeast Asia, bringing civilization to central and northern Thailand and central Laos more than 1,200 years ago. Make a short stop at Tham Phee beach before enjoying a light lunch while rafting back to your hotel on the river.

Note: in case you cannot visit the cave due to low water levels, this activity will be replaced with a visit to the Hot Springs in Kanchanaburi .

DAY 5 - AYUTTHAYA

Hit the road after breakfast at the hotel and visit the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre - an interactive museum dedicated to presenting the history of the Thailand– Burma Railway. Visit the Allied War Cemetery which is memorial to some 6,000 allied prisoners of war (POWs).

After lunch, continue onwards to Ayutthaya, which became the second capital of Siam around 1530 after Sukhothai. Enjoy a visit to the Ayutthaya Floating Market, with over 200 shops offering local goods and food products and spend some time here shopping and sightseeing.

DAY 6 - BANGKOK

After breakfast, depart by tuk-tuk to visit some of the most important temples and ruins in the historical city of Ayutthaya, including Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Viharn Phra Mongkol Bophit and the famous tree-entwined Buddha head at Wat Phra Mahathat. After taking some great photos, continue to the province of Nakhon Nayok and take a tour on a water buffalo cart, which was a traditional means of transport in past times. Before sitting down for lunch, you will have the opportunity to participate and assist the local chefs in preparing a delicious meal, or just listen to your chef explain the secrets to authentic Thai cooking. Enjoy your freshly prepared lunch in a local, simple garden house. After savouring this tasty meal, continue to Khun Dan Prakan Chon Dam, the longest dam construction in the kingdom. Afterwards, visit a site of the Royal Project for sustainable farming under the patronage of King Bhumibol and see rice planting in action (activity subject to season).

Return to Bangkok for your last night and enjoy a farewell group dinner.

DAY 7 - BANGKOK

Your tour ends today with a transfer to the airport for your onward journey home.

DAY 7 EXTENSION - CHIANG MAI

Pick up at your hotel in Bangkok and transfer to Bangkok airport for flight to Chiang Mai. On arrival at Chiang Mai International Airport be met and transferred to your hotel.

Enjoy the rest of the day free at your leisure. Relax in the hotel or perhaps go out and explore the charming old town, which is surrounded by historic city walls and a moat. Wander the streets lined with small traditional stores and food stands serving local dishes. In the evening, the night market is a must, with an impressive selection of artisanal products, colourful souvenirs, tasty snacks and more. Get ready to haggle!

DAY 8 - CHIANG MAI

Today we make our way to the beautiful golden Doi Suthep temple. This ornate temple’s origins date back to the 14th century and according to legend it is said that the temple houses an important relic – one of Buddha’s bones. Climb up the more than 300 steps to the temple for panoramic views and enjoy this magical experience. Next, we continue up the mountain of Doi Poi, located in a national park. Go up the mountain in a 4x4 vehicle and get acquainted with the people of the White Hmong hill tribe village. Here you see the Hmong in their colourful costumes selling their wide range of antiques, decorative ornaments and fabrics. After return to your hotel, the evening is at your leisure.

DAY 9 - CHIANG MAI

In the morning, visit the Thai Elephant Care Centre, which was set up to provide care for elderly elephants retired from working in logging operations and other work camps. At the centre, there are no elephant rides and visitors learn about how the elephants are nourished and taken care of. Enjoy the experience of feeding them a healthy snack of a few bananas and - if the time of your visit is right - watch them splash around during their bath-time.

Later return to your hotel to enjoy your last night in Chiang Mai.

DAY 10 - DEPARTURE DAY

After breakfast, you’ll receive a transfer back to Chiang Mai airport for your onward journey home.
