Take a journey to the world-famous Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, a temporary home to injured or orphaned orangutans. Spend some time watching these gentle creatures in this rehabilitation centre as they play and feed throughout this rainforest nursery, learning about animal conservation along the way. You’ll also get to watch gorgeous sun bears roam outside at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre *as you come to understand more about the plight of these *rare, honey-loving beasts.

Mount Kinabalu and its surrounds are known across the globe for its incredible range of nature, serving as home to around** 6,000 different species of flora and fauna** in total. Discover a UNESCO World Heritage-listed jungle paradise at the Mulu National Park – a spectacular untouched rainforest known for housing dramatic peaks and the longest cave in Asia: Deer Cave. Delve through a three-kilometre stretch of forest to reach this surreal landscape and, once inside, keep an eye out for the over two million bats that live here – 12 different species in total.

An optional extended tour *takes you from the shoreline of Kota Kinabalu to the balmy beaches of *Gaya Island, where magic sunsets and dramatic island views await.

You’ll take return boat transfers to the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park and spend time at the luxurious Gaya Island Resort & Spa where you’ll relax in your Canopy Villa. Set amongst tropical mangroves on a gently sloping hillside, these villas offer beautiful views and private beach access.

At** Gaya Island Resort, you’ll enjoy all-inclusive meals **with menus changing daily and array of locally sourced produce.

While a return boat transfer between Gaya Island and Kota Kinabalu is included in this package, those looking to transfer between the two outside of those times are able to catch a ferry once every two hours between 8 am and 6 pm. Unscheduled boat transfers are available at MYR 530 per boat and are not covered by this package.

International flights are not included and need to be purchased separately.

Arrival and departure transfers are only available on the first and last day of the tour. Any arrivals and departures outside of these days will need to make their own arrangements to/from the airport.

Travellers should have a basic level of physical fitness and mobility and must be able to negotiate uneven surfaces, climb stairs and board boats.

Travellers are advised to check with their local health professional at least 45 days prior to departure, as some vaccinations require 30 days or more to be effective. Proof of vaccination is not usually required unless you are coming from an infected area.

Day 1 – Kota Kinabalu

Welcome to Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah. Meet at the Mercure Kota Kinabalu hotel receiption at 6pm to find out details about your upcoming tour. If you have any free time beforehand, perhaps explore this intriguing city that was born between the Borneo jungle and the South China Sea. Modern-day 'KK' is a lively modern metropolis, having recovered from World War II bombings. The Sabah State Museum is a great place to immerse yourself in its backstory.

Day 2 – Kota Kinabalu

Start your day with an early morning pick-up to the foothills of Mount Kinabalu. A brief stop at the roadside Nabalu Market, where you can browse local fruits in season and assorted handicrafts. This is a great place to take panorama photos of Mount Kinabalu before continuing your journey to Poring Hot Springs. On arrival, you'll be briefed by our leader with two options: a guided nature walk (550 m) up to the canopy walkway OR a dip in the hot Sulphur spring baths.

Continue to Kinabalu Park for lunch. Your local guide will then take you to the Education Centre and Botanical Garden where you’ll learn about the wonderful flora of Kinabalu Park. Depart Kinabalu Park and return to your hotel.

Day 3 – Kinabatangan River

Fly from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan (approx. 50 mins flight). On arrival, visit the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary where captive Orangutans are re-introduced into the wild. You will be able to observe them at their feeding stations in the rainforest and at the nursery (if open). You will then proceed to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC). This centre rescues captured sun bears and is involved in sun bear conservation, welfare rehabilitation and education. Over 30 Sun Bears live at the centre in the bear house and outdoor enclosures. Depart Sepilok and proceed to the jetty in Sandakan where you will take a 1.5 hour boat cruise up the Lower Kinabatangan River, passing pristine mangrove forests and searching for wildlife.

You’ll arrive at the beautiful Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort and have lunch. After lunch, free to relax or explore the surrounding area on the nature boardwalk. Take an afternoon cruise in search of Proboscis Monkeys, birds, reptiles and other wildlife. As night falls witness the glittering of fireflies on the mangrove trees. Return to the lodge for dinner. After dinner, go on a guided night walk around the Lodge’s nature boardwalk and search for insects, birds and other wildlife.

Day 4 – Kinabatangan River

Enjoy an early morning cruise to observe more wildlife and birdlife. We cruise up to the nearby Ox-Bow Lake, Danau Pitas to explore the area. Enjoy a packed breakfast while admiring the natural surroundings. Then, visit the local fishing village, Kampung Abai. Interact with the local Orang Sungai people (River People) and observe the daily activities in this tiny fishing village before heading back.

After lunch, your afternoon is free to enjoy. At 4:30pm, take another river cruise along the Kinabatangan River to spot the wildlife. Dinner will be served back at the lodge.

Day 5 – Sandakan

After breakfast, depart the lodge and return to Sandakan by boat. The 2.5 hour journey offers another chance to see wildlife.

Arrive at Sandakan – Once the capital of British North Borneo, Sandakan traditionally had strong trading ties with Hong Kong. The Cantonese influence is palpable in the lively harbourside market, the many Chinese temples and in the local cuisine.

Day 6 – Sandakan

Spend the morning at your leisure exploring Sandakan Town. In the afternoon, visit the Sandakan War Memorial, where you will learn about the city's past as you stand on the same ground of the former Japanese POW camp. This site also marks the starting point of the tragic Sandakan Death Marches.

Travel to the Rainforest Discovery Centre to observe the beautiful and unique red flying squirrels there. These fascinating creatures do not technically fly in the sense birds do, but rather glide from tree to tree with the help of their unique anatomy. With long tails to provide stability, they cover some impressive distances. Afterwards, journey back to your hotel in Sandakan for the evening.

Day 7 – Mulu

Fly from Sandakan to Mulu, travelling via Kota Kinabalu. A transfer will take you to your accommodation for check-in.

After check-in, leave for Mulu National Park and begin a scenic 3km walk through primary rainforest to the entrance of the incredible Deer Cave - the world’s largest cave passage, with an entrance 150m wide and 120m high. Next, visit Langs Cave. The stalactites and stalagmites inside this cave are representative of the very best limestone formations in the park. Then, continue on to the Bat Observatory - most evenings at sundown, a spectacular exodus of about 2 million of bats can be observed as they leave the cave in search of food. Return to the resort.

Day 8 – Mulu

Take a longboat to Wind Cave and see the impressive ‘King’s Chamber’. Here, stalactites and stalagmites with delicate lace-like patterns are found. After a short walk and a short climb up 250 concrete steps, you’ll arrive at the entrance of Clearwater Cave. Like most caves in Mulu, Clearwater Cave provides a habitat for unique species of plants. One of these, the one-leafed plant can only be found at Mulu. Photo-sensitive algae grow on certain rocks and produce needle-like formations that point towards the source of light. Then, enjoy a close-by natural swimming area shaded by giant rainforest trees, a simple picnic or packed lunch and a swim before returning to your accommodation. The rest of the afternoon is free at your leisure.

Day 9 – Mulu

Fly from Mulu to Kota Kinabalu. Enjoy a drink at sunset at a rooftop bar in Kota Kinabalu, as well as a farewell dinner, as you celebrate the incredible trip you’ve embarked on,

Meet with your local guide (please bring your travel insurance details). After registration and a short briefing, take a boat ride to Gaya Island. Upon arrival – if your room is ready, you can proceed to check-in to your room otherwise, you can leave your luggage at the reception counter and take a walk around the island – don’t forget to visit the private beach!
