Where to Next? Destinations We’re Dreaming Of

Rebecca Ellwood, Staff Writer

“To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam the roads of lands remote, To travel is to live.” Hans Christian Andersen

From the deserts of the Sahara to the verdant Amazon Rainforest, the undulating forms of the Grand Canyon to the thundering waters of Victoria Falls, the world is the most amazing adventure playground: one which can take an entire lifetime to explore.

We’ve had our wings clipped, but only for the time being. Reality has never stopped us from dreaming before, and we’re certainly not going to allow it to do so now. Here, some of Luxury Escapes’ most avid travellers reveal where they’re dreaming of going to next – from beloved holiday favourites to far-flung honeymoons that were put on pause.

Travelling along the world’s longest railway in Russia

Georgia Ristivojevic – Customer Service Agent

“I have this fascination with travelling on land (as opposed to air) because you get to see so much more during the journey and can really immerse yourself in the local culture. I’d love to do the Trans-Siberian Railway because it’s the longest railroad in the world, and then I can tell everyone about how I’ve been on it. I would also like to experience the wilds of Siberia as I think it would be such a different environment to anything I’ve ever experienced before. One of my life goals is to travel the world’s largest country (Russia) so hopefully I can fulfil my goal this way… just hoping I don’t freeze on the journey!”

Devouring fresh bowls of bun cha in Hanoi, Vietnam

Nick Stevens – Operations & Campaign Manager

“I was lucky enough to sneak in a wedding a week before lockdown restrictions came into effect, and even luckier not to have ended up on the news as an outbreak hotspot. The flipside of that good fortune was that our honeymoon was called off – we had been planning on spending about three and a half weeks in the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand. As the only reason my wife agreed to marry me was that I had sold her on an awesome honeymoon, I am very keen to get her on a plane as soon as possible before our love fades any further. We met in Hanoi so maybe this isn’t bucket list as such, but we are absolutely hanging to get back for bowls of bun cha for breakfast every day, a few cà phê đás (Vietnamese coffees) to get the heart vibrating uncomfortably, pho chien phong for lunch and a trip to chicken street for dinner, followed by a few well-mannered beverages with friends and locals roadside at Bat Dan Bia Hoi – purveyors of the best freshly brewed beer and owners of the smallest plastic stools in town.”

Discovering the rice terraces of Bali

Varsha Rao – Content Producer, India

“I am a real beach-lover and most of my past holidays have been to tropical places like Seychelles, Maldives and Mauritius. But for some reason, I have missed out on Bali – and the more I hear about it, the more I fall in love with the idea of this Indonesian paradise. Those infinity pools, the lush greenery, the emerald-green rice terraces and those serene beaches are just my perfect holiday. Also, I am keen on becoming a certified scuba-diver, and I have heard it’s the perfect place to do that. I can’t wait to explore Bali once this lockdown ends.”

Embracing island life in Italy

Amanda Zirgulis – Account & Campaign Manager, Europe

“When I think about the Italian islands, my mind wanders to crisp, azure waters and rugged landscapes, that glorious warm sun turning me into a Mediterranean olive, homemade pasta with fresh tomatoes off the vine and plump, glistening gamberi, care-free beach days, boating along the coast, cruising along meandering roads with all the windows rolled down, blaring local Italian music and discovering villages with Italian fish mongers shouting out the daily catch. And of course: old Hollywood glamour a la Grace Kelly and Rita Hayworth.

“So many of the islands in Italy are places where you could literally plonk yourself down and take it all in, but my bucket listers are Ischia, known for its thermal spas, fragrant limoncello and rocky outcrops falling gently to the sea; Sardinia, with its pristine waters that are perfect for boating, ancient tower-fortresses and briny bottarga served with crispy bread and pane carasau; and last but not least, the island of Capri, to embrace my inner old school glamour girl.”

Uncovering the natural beauty of Kauai, Hawaii

Heather Howard – Growth Marketing Director, USA

“I’ve wanted to visit Hawaii for as long as I can remember, and it’s still on my bucket list. Each one of Hawaii’s eight main islands has its own character and unique draw, but I’m in love with the natural beauty of Kauai, the ‘Garden Isle.’ Dramatic rainforest-covered cliffs sweep down to jaw-dropping beaches and adventure abounds. Kauai also has great hospitality and a gentle pace of life, perfect for rediscovering the soul-enriching wonders of travel. I can’t wait to hike the Nāpali Coast, splash in the waves at Hanalei Bay, and feast with my family at a traditional lūʻau. See you soon, Kauai.”

Toasting breathtaking sunsets in the Greek Islands

Penny Cordner-Maas – Content Production Manager

“While I was lucky enough to get married just before isolation, we did have to postpone our European honeymoon. I’m still dreaming of returning to the Greek Islands one day soon — to see the whitewashed houses with blue doors and windows, to wander the imperfect cobblestone streets and relax on the white-sand beaches. I look forward to toasting the incredible sunsets with some local wine, grilled saganaki and my husband by my side, whenever that may be!”
