Discover the good life in Italy’s Umbrian region of Perugia known for its wines, medieval hill towns and magnificent food including the region’s speciality, truffles. If you’re looking for a taste of true Italy away from the more obvious tourist cities then Perugia and its surrounding countryside will dish up all the history, culture and pasta you’ll ever need.

Perugia Old Town

As with most places in Italy, one of the best things to do is to simply get lost along the narrow cobblestone lanes and in the busy piazzas. At the heart of Perugia you’ll find the mid-16th century Rocca Paolina fortress while the surrounding lanes are dotted with cafes that spill out onto the streets, chocolate shops and wine bars.

Assisi

Peaceful and packed with culture, the town of Assisi is surrounded by rolling hills and ideally located just 30 minutes outside Umbria’s capital of Perugia and just two hours from Rome and Florence, both of which have international airports. This is authentic Italy. A place where the locals won’t bother you with their attempts to flog their wares, where the Roman architecture dates back to the 1st century and where the leather shops sell belts, shoes, jackets and purses for prices that won’t leave you speechless.

Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi

Assisi is the birth and burial site of St. Francis and you’ll find many people travelling to Assisi are actually on a religious pilgrimage to the area. Whether you’re religious or not, the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi is a sight to behold. As the mother church of the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Assisi, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed site features 14th-century artworks by Cimabue, Giotto, the Lorenzetti brothers and Simone Martini as well as the tomb of St. Francis.

Perugina Chocolate Factory

If you’re a chocolate lover then the Perugina Chocolate Factory should definitely appear on your Italian itinerary. Stroll on walkways above the factory to learn about the process of making chocolate, discover the history of the company and even partake in a class praline making class followed by the best part – a tasting.

Wild Foods Truffle Hunt

The Umbria region is famous for its truffles and it would be rude not to join the locals on a truffle hunt. Wild Foods Truffle Hunt offers one of the regions best black truffle hunting experiences where you can scour the mountainside of Pettino with one of the company’s highly trained dogs. Taste the freshly dug truffle with a glass of prosecco before settling in for a pasta-making class followed by a traditional Umbrian mountain lunch where the star ingredient is, of course, truffle.
