Europe Beyond the Tour: Travel to the Top of Europe

Think of Switzerland and images of breathtaking snow-covered mountains, lush green meadows, pristine white glaciers and crystal-clear lakes come to mind. Covering the southern part of Switzerland is the stunning mountain range of the Swiss Alps.

The Swiss Alps, which covers almost 65% of the entire area of Switzerland, is dotted with vast glaciers, languid lakes, picture-perfect Alpine villages, scenic valleys, gorgeous gorges and pristine slopes. This is also where you will find some of the most iconic Swiss mountains including the Matterhorn, Jungfraujoch, and more.

As part of Luxury Escapes’ 10-day tour of Europe, you will travel to the Swiss Alps and have the option to experience a once-in-a-lifetime rail journey to Jungfraujoch.

Jungfraujoch is fondly referred to as the ‘Top of Europe’ thanks to its location: a staggering 3,454 metres above sea level, making it home to the highest railway station in Europe. It also connects the two sky-high mountains of Jungfrau and Mönch, both of which are situated more than 4,000 metres above sea level.

A train journey like no other

The train ride to Jungfraujoch is one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world and will take you higher and higher from Kleine Scheidegg to Eiger, a stunning mountain in the Bernese Alps, all the while passing through charming villages such as Lauterbrunnen and Wengen, before ultimately stopping at Jungfraujoch.

Here, you’ll experience jaw-dropping views of the never-ending Alpine peaks and the sensational Aletsch glacier.

Worth the wait

The construction of this gravity-defying railway line was an engineering marvel in itself. The story of how this railway line was conceived and finally executed is one wrought with drama and tragedy.

The construction took more than 16 years, with the most difficult part being the underground section in Eiger. Since 1912, the Jungfraujoch Railway has been welcoming tourists.

At the summit, you’ll find the ominous Alpine Sensation, a 250m long corridor that connects the Sphinx Hall with the Ice Palace and houses statues and sculptures dedicated to the miners who built (many of which sacrificed themselves for) the Jungfraujoch railway.

Exploration & Action

Jungfraujoch’s summit is also home to an Ice Palace — an icy cave filled with beautiful ice sculptures. Or, for front-row views of the Aletsch Glacier, head to the Sphinx Observation Deck.

For the more adventurous, Jungfraujoch hosts a SnowFun Park, where you can indulge in activities such as snowboarding, snow tubing, snow sledding and more.

If it’s Switzerland, there has to be a talk of Swiss chocolates. You can even visit the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven, a paradise for chocolate lovers where you can learn everything about the history of chocolate and how it’s made. You can also indulge your sweet tooth in some delicious Swiss chocolates.

What will charm you the most in the Swiss Alps are its countless villages that seem to be straight out of a postcard. Take, for instance, Lauterbrunnen, a tiny village in the heart of the Swiss Alps. It’s a classic Alpine village dotted with rolling green hills, snow-capped mountains and alluring chalets. This tiny village is also home to Stabbauch Falls, which is Europe’s highest free-falling waterfall.

If Lauterbrunnen impresses you, then the resort town of Wengen will take your breath away. With the stunning Jungfrau Mountain as the backdrop, this car-free village is absolutely stunning in all seasons. In summer, think paragliding, canyoning and river rafting. And in winter, get some skiing, hiking and toboggan runs done.

No matter where you go in the Swiss Alps, you will encounter scintillating natural views which won’t need any photo filter. Get high on the fresh mountain air here and enjoy a truly detoxifying holiday.
