Sri Lanka is one of the hottest destinations of the year with travellers looking for great food, five-star hotels and a tropical climate heading there for a holiday made up of equal parts relaxation and adventure. And one of the top places they’re visiting is Galle.

Galle is famous for its iconic stilt fishermen, beautiful beaches, lush tea plantations and colonial architecture that has earnt the city recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site. Here’s the Luxury Escapes rundown of the top places to eat and things to see while in this beautiful beachside city.

Stilt Fishermen

Stilt fishing is a traditional method of fishing unique to Sri Lanka. Local fishermen sit or stand on a ‘petta’ (a crossbar) tied to a vertical pole and sink it into the sand a few metres offshore. From here, the fishermen have a great vantage point of mackerel or herring.

However, it’s debatable how many of the fishermen are actually looking for the freshest catch and how many just enjoy posing for tourist photos. Either way, it’s a sight that shouldn’t be missed!

Tea Plantations

With a rich 150-year-old tea industry, if you’re in search of the perfect brew then Sri Lanka is the place to find it. While Galle isn’t the most famous area in Sri Lanka for tea plantations, the landscape is still dotted with the plenty of them including the Handunugoda Tea Factory.

Our tip? Rent a moped and head out to the backwaters near Hikkaduwa where you’ll find less touristy tea plantations and friendly locals.

The Beaches

Beautiful white-sand beaches abound in Sri Lanka and two of the best are near Galle. Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa (pictured) are two beaches that you won’t want to miss.

Fringed by palm trees, the banana-shaped Unawatuna Beach is popular with locals looking to take a dip in the ocean before heading behind the trees to a strip of cool restaurants, while Hikkaduwa is a hit with surfers and those looking to snorkel in beautifully clear waters.

The Food

Influenced by foreign traders, Indonesian cuisine and the flavours of Southern India, Sri Lankan fare is bursting with delicious flavours and fresh seafood dishes including the famous Kerala fish curry.

For a great dining experience in Galle, The Fort Printers serves the freshest catch of the day in a cute fairy-lit atmosphere with standout dishes including Sri Lankan prawn curry with fresh coconut sambal and the seared yellowfin tuna with vegetable couscous.

There’s also Fortaleza, where you can enjoy traditional Sri Lankan recipes with a Singaporean twist served in what was once a spice warehouse.

Safari

No trip to Sri Lanka would be complete with a safari experience and Galle is ideally located for day trips to two of the country’s most popular national parks.

Both Udawalawe National Park and Yala National Park are situated approximately three hours away from Galle and are home to leopards, Asian elephants, buffalo, eagles, langur monkeys and many more exotic animals.
