It’s no secret that Australians love Bali. The Indonesian island is the most popular travel destination for Luxury Escapes customers and the trend doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

Thanks to regular (and often very affordable) flights to Bali, it’s no surprise that Australians are choosing to holiday overseas when the cost of a week-long escape to Indonesia’s most popular island can often rival (or even be cheaper), than staying on home soil.

Bali is an obvious holiday destination, catering to everyone from families, couples and groups of friends.

For those planning a trip to Australia’s favourite holiday destination, we caught up with our Luxury Escapes’ Bali expert who has travelled there so frequently he’s lost count.

Known for its magical powers, cheeky monkeys, enchanting views of the Ayung river, mystical Ubud mist and lush rice terraces, Ubud has quickly become the must-stay destination for health enthusiasts searching for a picturesque wellness retreat.

The Vibe: The secret underbelly of fine-dining culinary delights.

Insider’s Tip: Locavore, a renowned cocktail and restaurant bar made famous by its take on modern degustation made with local produce.  You’ll find it hidden in the laneways of central Ubud. Word of warning, you’ll need to book well in advance as it has a waitlist.

Nusa Dua

Nusa Dua

There’s a good reason why many of the world’s most renowned five-star hotels and resorts are setting up shop in Nusa Dua. Unlike many other areas of Bali, this region is home to pristine white sand beaches with sparkling blue water which is actually safe for swimming in.

The Vibe: A relaxed island atmosphere peppered with opulent five-star resorts.

Insider’s Tip: The best champagne brunch is at the St Regis. Revered the world over by food connoisseurs, the multi-award-winning Astor Diamond Champagne Brunch at Kayuputi every Sunday and offers guests an extraordinary and elegant gastronomic experience including free-flowing French bubbles.

The upmarket answer to Bali’s infamous Kuta, Seminyak is Bali’s nightlight and culinary capital. Known for amazing dining options there’s everything from casual beach clubs to modern fusion and fine-dining.

The Vibe: Upmarket chic with a to-die-for selection of eateries.

Insider’s Tip: Step back in time to Plantation Grill which flaunts twenties-style luxury with marble finishes, huge glass windows looking out to the sea and a wine list hand selected by head sommelier Menno – who has travelled the world to bring the most amazing affordable (and not so affordable) wines to Bali.

Bali’s answer to an Australian beach town has hit the nail on the head so well that it’s home to a vast number of Aussie expats. The three main strips all run towards the beach. Although black sand may not be enticing to most tourists, the notoriously challenging surf breaks here attract surfers from around the world.

The Vibe: Hipsters…everywhere.

Insider’s Tip: The Slow Hotel owned by Ksubi Jeans is a brand new boutique hotel meets restaurant meets art gallery. Great for lunch, some kombucha, some local craft beer and art exhibitions. It has also taken out the title for the best Instagram page in Bali, so get your cameras ready. Keep an eye on the events page for new art exhibitions and free parties.

Shhh, Sanur is quite possibly Bali’s best-kept secret. The original holiday hotspot for royalty, this idyllic region of Bali is now a forgotten destination where the sand is white and the streets are quiet. Here you’ll get the perfect slice of Bali without the high price tags found in tourist-laden places like Seminyak.

The Vibe: A hidden oasis showcasing the best of Bali.

Insider’s TipCasablanca bar, the most colourful place in Sanur is home to great live music nightly, a relaxed holiday vibe and flowing cocktails.

Famed for spectacular cliff-fringed coastline, Uluwatu is the happy medium between tourist hot spots and seclusion. The dramatic coastline makes for jaw-dropping views while surf enthusiasts can still paddle out and make the most of incredible surf breaks.

The Vibe: World-class villas meet hidden beaches.

Insider’s Top: Watching the sunset from Rock Bar needs to be on the top of your life. Voted as one of the best bars in the world by CNN and The New York Times, there’s no better place to take in Uluwatu’s unique views.
