With good vibes, great nightlife and even better food, everyone should experience a city break in Brisbane. Luxury Escapes writer Anna Tabrah spent 24 hours in Brisbane in order to bring you the ultimate guide to the Queensland city.
9am: If you’re looking for a city-chic hotel in a great location, look no further than Ovolo The Valley (Fortitude Valley). Getting out of your comfortable king bed won’t be easy, but the thought of fresh coffee downstairs at Société, the cosy adjoining French café, and a sugar rush from the lolly bar at reception should be enough to put a spring in your step.
10am: Time for breakfast! Société has a small but tasty continental offering, including mini muffins, muesli and fresh sourdough. If you’re after something more substantial, you won’t have to look far; Fortitude Valley is full of great brunch spots. Local favourites include the bagels at Reverends Fine Coffee and salmon French toast at 321 Water Street.
11am: Head to South Bank for a walk. If the weather’s good enough, make use of the manmade beach or sunbathe in the botanic garden. You could spend your day dodging the people whizzing by on Lime scooters or embrace the trend and rent one yourself. The app tells you where you can pick one up and lets you pay at the touch of a button. When you’re done just leave it on the pavement – someone will be along soon enough to claim their turn!
1pm: For lunch check out Howard Smith Wharves, a new riverfront development with bars and restaurants. Felons Fish n’ Chippery does exactly what it says on the tin or try the Greek food at GRECA. Thirsty? Quench your thirst with beer at Felons Brewing Co. or check out ARC Dining and Wine Bar’s 400-strong wine list. Stroll a little further along and you’ll find Madame Wu – the lunch special is amazing value, with the duck buns and the Asian take on fried chicken a highlight.
3pm: All that walking tired you out? Hop on the ferry back towards Fortitude Valley. It’s a scenic cruise for tourists and an efficient mode of public transport for locals – you’ll be amazed at the speed and efficiency.
5pm: Get ready for drinks! Ovolo offers a free happy hour for guests between 5.30PM and 6.30PM, with beer, wine, spirits and sparkling. Have a couple by the pool, overlooking the city, then head back to your room and raid your free mini bar, stocked with wine and beer, and refreshed daily.
7pm: Dinner at Stokehouse Q is a must. This riverside restaurant offers iconic Brisbane views and seafood to die for. Fraser Isle spanner crab on lemon cornbread and king prawn tacos make a delicious appetiser, followed by mains of honey-glazed duck, organic lamb or fresh market fish. Leave room for a dessert such as white chocolate parfait with strawberries or vanilla semifreddo or have a Mexican espresso martini made with tequila instead.

10pm: Head back to Fortitude Valley for drinks and dancing. Whether you’re after a quieter bar or a heaving dancefloor – Ann Street has something for everyone. Savile Row is speakeasy style and offers a long list of potent cocktails. Cloudland is perfect for those seeking something quieter amongst the many clubs, with an extensive drinks list and beautiful art deco interiors.
1am: All danced out? At least it’s only a short walk back to your comfortable bed at Ovolo The Valley. Help yourself to the detox water in the foyer and you might even avoid that dreaded hangover (no guarantees!).
9am: Need a little extra help getting out of bed today? Ask your in-room Alexa to put on a motivational playlist while you make yourself a much-needed Nespresso coffee!
