From incredible wildlife encounters to adrenaline-fuelled sports and thrill-seeking bungee jumps – a trip to South Africa is all about living life to the fullest.
Here, we sum up ten incredible, not-to-be-missed activities to add to your South Africa itinerary.
Sandboarding is one of the most accessible adventure sports because you need no prior experience. As long as you are relatively physically fit, all you need is a positive attitude, some sunscreen and a hat to ward off that desert sun. A professional instructor will take you through the basics and you’ll be cruising through the dunes before you know it.
De Kloof Luxury Estate is often described as the hidden jewel of Swellendam and offers a premium residential experience to guests. Enjoy an array of outdoor activities here, with fishing one of the most popular. Trout, bass and fly fishing are all on offer – perfect for the keen angler.
Don’t be fooled into thinking quad biking is all about powering through sand dunes at the highest speeds possible – although that is an option of course! There are all kinds of quad biking adventures on offer in South Africa, including gentler, guided rides alongside the streams, hills and riverbanks of this beautiful country.
Catch some waves at Chintsa Beach, located in the Wild Coast region of South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. A favourite holiday spot amongst locals, it’s a great place to get an authentic feel for the community. There’s a very pleasant semi-tropical climate in Chintsa, making it perfect both for the surfers and those who’d rather lie back and watch the action from the sand.
Named after the Zulu word for “the place where the sun rises”, Mpumalanga is popular spot for river rafting. Hit the Sabie River and let grade two and three rapids test your skills. If you want to challenge yourself, grade three to five rapids are available at Blyde River too.
Swing into adventure with a 68-metre freefall at 180km/h in under three seconds on one of the world’s highest Cable Gorge Swings. You’ll be rewarded with stunning scenery and a serious adrenaline rush, but be warned: this is not for the faint-hearted!
Enjoy spectacular views as you abseil next to Lehr’s Waterfall at Oribi Gorge. Descend 110 metres as you take in your surroundings, with an adrenaline high guaranteed.
Delve deeper into the beauty of Storms River on a kayaking adventure, taking you through seemingly bottomless pools, deep caves and ancient forests. It’s a breathtaking journey that will give you an entirely new perspective on the Tsitsikamma region.

Experience an introduction to life in a South African township with a guided tour through areas like Langa, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha. Meet the friendly locals and discover their local businesses, where the children go to school and how they live their day to day lives. Most tours will also give you the opportunity to purchase local crafts, attend a church service (Sundays only) and even visit a shebeen where you can taste traditional African beer.
Only the brave should attempt a bungee jump off South Africa’s tallest bridge. You’ll zipline from the bank to the arch, from where you’ll take the plunge. Your reward? A winch ride back up to the arch, from where you’ll take the suspended walkway back to the bank. The walkway is bolted to the underside of the road deck, 216 meters above the Bloukrans River, with spectacular views and a final exposure to the full height of the bridge.
