In the second installment of our exclusive California Series – in which we get the inside scoop on the best places to go and things to do in California USA with Allie Sparr, who works together with Californian tourist boards to promote the destination around the world – we ask Allie about the most unmissable experiences in San Francisco, both on and off the beaten track.

It turns out if the Mission District and Golden Gate Park aren’t at the top of your list, they should be. Scroll down to watch the interview and find out why.

Looking for somewhere to stay in the city? Check out our exclusive offer for San Francisco’s only waterfront luxury boutique hotel, Hotel Vitale, here.

What are the top three unmissable experiences in San Francisco?

Of course when you go to San Francisco you want to see the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. For the Golden Gate Bridge, one of my favourite ways to experience that is to take a bike ride over the bridge. You end up in Sausalito, which is a beautiful little town. You can have lunch and explore a little bit then take the ferry back to Fisherman’s Wharf. My tip for Alcatraz is to book two to three months ahead as it sells out really far in advance. I would also go to Golden Gate Park – that’s something that a lot of people don’t immediately think of. It’s actually 20{a6f918a28d0c453b79f16bf9c353d89c8f4246dd535f28283d5e631e0d8f251e} bigger than New York’s Central Park, and its full of different museums and gardens and areas to explore. They do big concerts and festivals and it’s a really amazing part of the city that is definitely worth checking out.

Name one fantastic San Francisco experience off the beaten track.

I love getting out into the Mission District, there’s a progressive dining tour you can do. It’s some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever tasted and it’s a really different part of the city.

Coming up soon: Allie let’s us in on California’s best-kept secret, Sonoma County, and talks everything Yosemite, Huntington Beach and the destination du jour for the Hollywood elite, Greater Palm Springs.
